Fostering College-Going Expectations of Immigrant Students Through the Sympathetic Touch of School Leadership 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

This article intends to support the efforts of administrators, teachers, and community activists to center race, equity, and anti-deficit perspectives within the practice of school leadership. By drawing upon methods of critical race studies, and Du Bois's 1935 concept of the sympathetic touch, the author provides examples of anti-deficit approaches to sympathetic leadership in a large, diverse high school in California. Through reflections and recollections upon this case study, the author underscores ways for school leaders to formulate the conditions for college-going expectations for low-income immigrant students. This retrospective account includes concrete leadership examples, political strategies, and scenarios to illuminate the relevance and utilities of the sympathetic touch in educational leadership. In effect, the article calls for school leaders to harness anti-deficit and anti-oppressive mindsets in the work of inclusion, equity, and social justice. 相似文献

In the present paper, chromosome numbers are reported for 33 species
and varieties of Chinese Umbelliferae which belong to 17 genera in the subfamily Api-
oideae. Chromosome number of each species is shown in Table I. Eighteen countings
are newly reported. Chromatin bridges and fragments were observed at anaphase I in
some materials. It is suggested that the fertility reduction in some species is due to

The purpose of this study was to examine the pattern of the relationships among motivational beliefs and science achievement of 8th grade Taiwanese students, given that the students in Taiwan have high science academic achievement but low motivational beliefs in science learning on a series of international large-scale assessments. Three motivational beliefs in science learning, including self-concept, intrinsic value, and utility value, were conceptualized based on the modern expectancy-value theory. Data are from the Taiwanese proportion of the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study 2011 dataset. Three groups of students, namely, the total group, the high-achieving group (HAG), and the low-achieving group (LAG), were examined. Results showed that the patterns of the relative predictions of motivational beliefs to science achievement were distinct for each group. In the total group, all the motivational beliefs could positively predict science achievement (R 2?=?20%). On the other hand, self-concept could positively and negatively predict science achievement for the HAG and LAG students, respectively, and intrinsic value could positively predict science achievement for the LAG students. In conclusion, this study, based on the Taiwanese representative sample, contributes to the discussion regarding national variation in students’ motivational beliefs and provides empirical-based evidence of the motivational beliefs in science learning of students of different levels of ability. 相似文献

This study examines the Noyce Program, which provides scholarships for STEM majors in return for teaching in high need schools.
The perceptions of 555 scholarship recipients were investigated using hierarchical cluster analysis, confirmatory factor analysis,
and Rasch analysis to determine how the scholarship influenced their commitments to teaching in high need schools. The analyses
indicated that recipients perceived the scholarship in two ways: it influenced their commitment to complete their certification
program and to teach in high need schools. Implications for teacher education programs include that recruitment strategies
should identify candidates who are committed to teaching in high need schools and programs should provide experiences to encourage

This exploratory study foregrounds the important, but often understudied social side of pre-service teacher development and its relation to teaching performance in one university-based teacher preparation program in the US. We examine the extent to which pre-service elementary teachers’ social relationships and perceptions of peer trust and efficacy are associated with performance on a high stakes mathematics teaching assessment. Findings suggest that social and emotional support through close social ties, peer trust, and self-efficacy are significantly and positively associated with pre-service teachers’ teaching performance. Our work further contributes to the development and discourse about teacher education in university-based teacher preparation programs. 相似文献
