The present study was conducted to evaluate some of the components of antioxidant defense system and oxidative damage in 20
male patients of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). The results were compared with 20 healthy male smokers and 20 healthy male
non-smokers volunteers. Patients were subjected to detailed clinical examination and laboratory investigations. Blood samples
were collected for estimating reduced glutathione (GSH), total thiols (T-SH) malondialdehyde (MDA), transaminases (AST, ALT),
glutathione-S-transferease (GST) and gammaglutamyl transferase (GGT). Serum aspartate amino transferase (AST)/alanine amino
transferase (ALT) ratio was significantly (p<0.01) reduced in ALD patients as compared to the controls. However, the core
of utility of MDA and GST was found to be significantly (p<0.01) increased in ALD patients compared to controls. There was
a significant negative correlation of MDA with both GSH and TSH. Plasma GGT levels were significantly (p<0.01) increased in
alcoholics and the enzyme showed a significant positive correlation with MDA. These results give enough evidence of increased
oxidative stress and compromised antioxidant defense system in patients with ALD. 相似文献

The present study comprised 100 patients of essential hypertension who were screened for fasting hyperinsulinemia, which was
detected in 77% cases. Twenty such hyperinsulinemic cases were subjected to 4 weeks of dietary control phase followed by 6
weeks of omega-3 fatty acids substitution [either 0.6 g/d (group 1) or 1.2 g/d (group 2)]. The mean basal fasting plasma insulin
levels were significantly higher (p<0.001) in patients of hypertension when compared to normal controls (126.51±80.36 and
19.35±12.61 μU/ml respectively). At the end of 4 weeks of diet control only, no significant change was observed in any parameter.
After substitution of omega-3 fatty acid, a significant reduction of fasting plasma insulin levels in both group 1 (29%) and
group 2 (22.8%) was observed (p<0.001). Significant reduction of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (16.4% and 25% respectively),
serum cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoprotein was also noted in both groups (p<0.001), while high density lipoprotein
increased by ∼8 mg% in both groups. Thus omega-3 fatty acid substituion in low dose along-with curtailment of dietary omega-6
fatty acid may be used as an adjunctive measure in the management of essential hypertension. 相似文献

Drawing on institutional theory, we examine how institutions have influenced technology development trends in the U.S. since the mid-19th century. Based on an inductive analysis of the history of technology development and corporate R&D, we show that both formal and informal institutional rules and constraints played a role in the initial rise of markets for technology, their decline during the early-20th century, and their eventual return at the end of the 20th century. We also find that formal and informal institutions influenced the widespread adoption of in-house R&D labs during the mid-20th century. Our study integrates insights from both the economics and sociology branches of institutional theory. This perspective is particularly useful to analyze historical phenomenon and shifts in trends across long time periods. 相似文献

The novelty of three-dimensional visualization technology (3DVT), such as virtual reality (VR), has captured the interest of many educational institutions. This study’s objectives were to (1) assess how VR and physical models impact anatomy learning, (2) determine the effect of visuospatial ability on anatomy learning from VR and physical models, and (3) evaluate the impact of a VR familiarization phase on learning. This within-subjects, crossover study recruited 78 undergraduate students who studied anatomical structures at both physical and VR models and were tested on their knowledge immediately and 48 hours after learning. There were no significant differences in test scores between the two modalities on both testing days. After grouping participants on visuospatial ability, low visuospatial ability learners performed significantly worse on anatomy knowledge tests compared to their high visuospatial ability counterparts when learning from VR immediately (P = 0.001, d = 1.515) and over the long-term (P = 0.003, d = 1.279). In contrast, both low and high visuospatial ability groups performed similarly well when learning from the physical model and tested immediately after learning (P = 0.067) and over the long-term (P = 0.107). These results differ from current literature which indicates that learners with low visuospatial ability are aided by 3DVT. Familiarizing participants with VR before the learning phase had no impact on learning (P = 0.967). This study demonstrated that VR may be detrimental to low visuospatial ability students, whereas physical models may allow all students, regardless of their visuospatial abilities, to learn similarly well. 相似文献

Indian black tea; CTC leaf and dust, produced by Tata Tea Limited, Kolkata, (India) was studiedin vitro as potential scavenger of oxygen free radicals. Super oxide anions were generated in a system containing xanthine—xanthine
oxidase (enzymic system) and by NADH- phenozine methosulphate (non enzymic system). Anions were assayed in terms of uric acid
formation and reduction of nitroblue tetrazolium salt, which were shown to be suppressed by tea extracts. Extracts from both
leaf and dust also inhibted the formation of hydroxyl radicalsin vitro in the enzymic system comprising hypoxanthine—Cu+2—sodium ascorbate and xanthine oxidase and in non enzymic system of deoxyribose—Cu+2—sodium ascorbate and H2O2 as well as the Cu+2 induced lipid peroxidation in human low density lipoprotein. Feeding with black tea in normal rats for sixty days increased
their antioxidant activity and their liver microsomes were shown to be protected against peroxidation of lipids as stimulated
by metal ions with enzymic or non enzymic reactants. Furthermore feeding with tea extracts in normal as well as triton WR—1339
induced hyperlipidemic rats caused decrease in their plasma levels of total cholesterol, phospholipids and triglycerides.
The antioxidant and lipid lowering activities of both extracts from CTC leaf and dust tea was comparable and may be due to

The level of sialic acid in the obese polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNL) was found to be significantly reduced as compared to normal. Activity of sialic acid degrading enzyme, sialidase, was found to be increased in the obese state. AbstractAlthough the South African government has made numerous strides in addressing equity and social justice in education, significant inequalities still exist in learner performance, especially in many impoverished schools. One of the reasons cited for poor learner achievement is the ineffective leadership role of school management teams (SMTs). This article reports on a study that explored the instructional leadership role of SMTs of public schools with the view to closing the achievement gap in poor performing schools. To gain better insights into the SMTs’ realities and experiences of their work as curriculum leaders, qualitative research located within the interpretivist paradigm was undertaken. The findings revealed that SMTs of impoverished schools exhibit consistently low to moderate instructional leadership competencies which ultimately affect student learning. In order to close the achievement gap in poor performing schools, SMTs should play a more pronounced instructional leadership role by leading and managing core curriculum matters and educational resources effectively and efficiently. 相似文献

This paper is a study of the adaption of a typical corporate strategic planning process to a university setting. This midwestern state university with over 22,000 students and a number of doctoral, masters, and baccalaureate programs, found that an ongoing planning process with a yearly cycle offers it a number of advantages not avail-able with its prior approaches.
