In some areas of rural Africa, long‐standing cultural traditions and beliefs may discourage parents from verbally engaging with their young children. This study assessed the effectiveness of a parenting program designed to encourage verbal engagement between caregivers and infants in Wolof‐speaking villages in rural Senegal. Caregivers (n = 443) and their 4‐ to 31‐month‐old children were observed at baseline in 2013 and 1 year later at follow‐up. Results showed that caregivers in program villages nearly doubled the amount of child‐directed speech during a play session compared to baseline, whereas caregivers in matched comparison villages showed no change. After 1 year, children in program villages produced more utterances, and showed greater improvement in vocabulary and other language outcomes compared to children in comparison villages.  相似文献

Summary

The four-year Phase II of the action-research programme "Indigenous Soil and Water Conservation in Africa (ISWC II) started in December 1996 and operates in the French-speaking countries Tunisia, Burkina Faso and Cameroon and in the English-speaking countries Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. It had received a budget-neutral extension from the funders (Netherlands Development Aid, DGIS) for the entire 2001.

This paper is based on the Participatory Technology Development (PTD) experiences with the ISWC II project in Cameroon. The ISWC II project aimed to improve the effectiveness of both indigenous and modern Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) practices through a process of joint experimentation involving farmers, scientists and development agents.

The authors have developed the informal and formal strategies used and their impacts in the process of the institutionalisation of the PTD approach in Cameroon.  相似文献

While the costs of literacy programmes continue to outstrip the resources available, this article argues that much can be done by bringing more efficiency and clarity into accounting and financing procedures. Drawing on the example of Senegal, the author argues for more effective methods of calculating the costs of programmes, analysing the various cost components, managing budgets and evaluating cost- effectiveness. He also points out the need for partnership between different sectors and emphasizes that political stability is very important for positive results.  相似文献
