Engineering Staff Utilization

The staff members of an engineering school, perhaps more than those in any other group, are subject to continually changing technical responsibilities. The rate of change in the decades preceding 1950 was relatively slow, and new material was easily assimilated by competent individuals. In recent years, the increasing flow of new knowledge has presented a situation in which the effective instructor must be at the same time an ardent student. The danger of becoming obsolete is ever present. This paper attempts to analyze some of the problems which are presented to the senior staff members, to the middle-aged staff members, to the young men, and to the administrators. Seeing Library Data: A Prototype Data Visualization Application for Librarians

Visualizations can add value to raw library data. Tools that programmatically make such visualizations interactive can further increase the value of these data by giving librarians visual tools to analyze their datasets. To demonstrate these benefits, Kingsborough Community College Library built SeeCollections (http://b7jl.org/seecollections), a Web application that visualizes the libraries’ collections of books and e-books. This article discusses the how SeeCollections gathers data from Kingsborough's discovery layer API (Application Programming Interface) and transforms these data to create visualizations for the Web. SeeCollections is a lightweight, proof-of-concept data application based on a vendor API. API data are often accessible in academic libraries but are frequently underutilized. SeeCollections was built to demonstrate the immediate value of these API data sources to Kingsborough librarians by providing a visual interface to discovery layer data. Keeping in mind the broader literature on data visualization, this article will explore how SeeCollections was built.  相似文献

This is the second part of a review of research on higher education since World War II. Fart I, published in the previous issue of this Journal, examined how research responded to post‐war reconstruction of the later 1940s and the rising community expectations for education of the 1950s and 1960s. In Part II the themes are equality of opportunity and the end of expansion. By the mid‐1960s many researchers were questioning the representativeness of participation in higher education and the nature of the education process. More recently some of the research questions have been reminiscent of the late 1940s, that is, how can the efficiency of higher education be improved. Whereas expansion and optimism characterised the first thirty post‐war years however, the context is now one of reduced resources and some pessimism.  相似文献

Abstract

This article examines the ACPA/NASPA Competencies as functional protocol of the neoliberal state. Described as ‘not a checklist’, Competencies structure rubrics, conferences, jobs, and performance as static, indicative of a power/knowledge rooted in protocol. We utilize post qualitative thinking, specifically poetics, to create a series of experimentations (in)tension with Competencies. The association between academic self‐beliefs and reading achievement among children at risk of reading failure

This paper investigates whether children's academic self‐beliefs are associated with reading achievement and whether the relationship is modified by gender and/or age. Data were collected from children at risk of reading failure, that is, emergent readers (6‐ to 8‐year‐olds) in socioeconomically disadvantaged areas reading at a level below the population mean. The authors' own measure of attitude to reading and perceived competence was used. The study found a significant positive association between attitude to reading in class and vocabulary and phonemic awareness and a significant negative association between perceived competence at reading in class and single‐word reading and spelling. Girls' attitude to reading and perceived competence were more positively associated with reading achievement, and this was most evident in the first grade. Perceived competence was inflated among those with the poorest reading and also among boys, in association with reading‐related skills found most challenging by children in this sample.  相似文献
