Private institutions are increasingly visible in the higher education landscape of Egypt. Many of these institutions, however, are within the ‘demand-absorbing’ category, offered at relatively lower fees and requiring lower test scores for admission. Building on interview data, this paper looks at how the graduates of some of these institutes reflect on their learning experience. In the discourse of these graduates, the learning experience is described as ‘easy’ and less demanding. This ‘easy’ education is accepted, justified and even celebrated. Credential fetish and the social status associated with a higher education degree are central to the perpetuation of the allure of ‘easy’. However, ‘easy’ education is also condemned for its compromised quality and low status. The paper seeks to situate these competing and overlapping discourses on private institutes within the analysis of the structure of the education system in Egypt and the global neoliberal tide for education reform.  相似文献

Building on a mixed method research approach, this article reports on an analysis of the difference between public and private higher education institutions (HEIs) in Egypt in terms of teaching methods, quality assessment approaches and alumni engagement. An analysis of the survey data compared the experiences of 1 713 graduates of both private and public HEIs. Qualitative case study data seeks to explain the noted differences and similarities. The analysis showed that both types of institutions fall short of providing student-activating teaching methods; engaging students in quality assessment; or supporting graduates through job placement services. The analysis related the similarity between the two types of institutions to the state governance approach and its focus on education inputs, recommending a shift to an accountability regime that is focused on education outcomes and performance.  相似文献

A person-centered approach was employed to investigate how students' evaluation of perceived teacher utility value messages, i.e., fear appeals, as a threat and as a challenge, combined within individuals and how these combinations related to student engagement. Two studies were conducted with students in their final two years of secondary education. Empirically distinct clusters emerged at two time points in the academic year. Evaluating the message in the fear appeal at a higher level of challenge than threat was beneficial. Unexpectedly, high threat was associated with high engagement, as long as high challenge was also present, however, this combination was also related to high emotional disaffection. Moderate threat combined with moderate challenge had the most detrimental relationship with student engagement. Educational interventions should aim to increase the likelihood of a challenge evaluation.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to identify the level of partnership between the school counselor, families and the local community in Jordan, as well as highlighting the factors that affect this partnership. A “School Counselor Involvement in School-Family-Community Partnerships Scale” was developed and administered to a sample of 152 school counselors in order to measure the level of such partnerships. The results indicated that the school counselors’ involvement was more prominent in providing services and information for students and parents, and coordinating efforts to raise the academic level of students. The results revealed that counselors’ attitudes, self-esteem, and school climate represented the most salient factors that affected school-family-community partnerships. Findings also recognized barriers to counselors’ involvement, including communication with parents and lacking the necessary skills. Based on the findings, it seems that Jordanian school counselors need training and efforts to overcome barriers related to partnership behaviors.  相似文献

This study is an application of a Multiple Intelligences-based approach to assessment and educational practice in early childhood years, the Spectrum Project, in a Lebanese kindergarten. A control group design was used. The Spectrum activities were manipulated for the whole academic year by 150 kindergarten students (75 girls, 75 boys), enrolled in one branch of a private school, while the other branch of the same school worked with the regular curriculum. The purpose of the study was to determine if, through assessment of those activities, a profile of children's abilities, strengths, and weaknesses could be identified. Means and standard deviations for every activity were reported. A second purpose was to investigate the relationship between the different domains or intelligences. Pearson product-moment coefficients were computed. Finally, the difference in the end-of-year achievement between the experimental and the control group was investigated. The data are discussed in terms of cross-cultural interpretations. Implications and recommendations for future research are presented.  相似文献

The aims of this study were: (i) to determine kinematic, kinetic, and electromyographic characteristics of Junzuki karate punch in professional karate athletes; (ii) to identify biomechanical parameters that correlate with punch force and lead to a higher punching performance; (iii) to verify the presence of muscle co-activation in the upper limb, trunk, and lower limb muscles. Data were collected from nine experienced karatekas from the Accademia Italiana Karate e Arti Marziali during the execution of the specific punch. Mean punch forces (181.2?N) delivered to the target, the range of motion of both right and left knees (1.13 and 0.82?rad) and right elbow (1.49?rad) joints, and the angles at impact (knee: 0.81 and 0.91?rad; elbow: 1.19?rad) in the sagittal plane were computed. Furthermore, the trunk rotational angular acceleration (63.1?rad?s?2), force related to the lower limbs (550.2 and 425.1?N), and co-activation index for the upper limb (36.1% and 34.7%), trunk (24.5% and 16%), and lower limbs (16.0% and 16.1%) muscles were evaluated bilaterally. Significant positive correlations were found between the punch force and both right and left knee flexion at the instant of impact and right and left leg force. Significant negative correlation was found between the punch force and maximum trunk angular acceleration. Significant differences (p?=?.03) in the co-activation index among the upper limb, trunk, and lower limbs muscles highlighted a rostro-caudal gradient on both body sides. With increasing popularity of the Internet and tremendous amount of on-line text, automatic document classification is important for organizing huge amounts of data. Readers can know the subject of many document fields by reading only some specific Field Association (FA) words. Document fields can be decided efficiently if there are many FA words and if the frequency rate is high. This paper proposes a method for automatically building new FA words. A WWW search engine is used to extract FA word candidates from document corpora. New FA word candidates in each field are automatically compared with previously determined FA words. Then new FA words are appended to an FA word dictionary. From the experiential results, our new system can automatically appended around 44% of new FA words to the existence FA word dictionary. Moreover, the concentration ratio 0.9 is also effective for extracting relevant FA words that needed for the system design to build FA words automatically.  相似文献
