One of the modules in the course Food Chemistry at Wageningen University (Wageningen, The Netherlands) focuses on quantitative
problem-solving skills related to chemical reactions. The intended learning outcomes of this module are firstly, to be able
to translate practical food chemistry related problems into mathematical equations and to solve them and secondly, to have
a quantitative understanding of chemical reactions in food. Until 3 years ago the learning situation for this module was inefficient
for both teachers and students. For this learning situation a staff/student ratio of 1/25 was experienced to be insufficient:
the level of student frustration was high and many students could not finish the tasks within the scheduled time. To make
this situation more efficient for both students and teachers and to lower the level of frustration, digital learning material
was designed. The main characteristic of this learning material is that it provides just-in-time information, such as feedback,
hints and links to background information. The material was evaluated in three case studies in a normal educational setting
(n = 22, n = 31, n = 33). The results show that now frustration of students is low, the time in classes is efficiently used, and the staff/student
ratio of 1/25 is indeed sufficient. A staff student ratio of around 1/40 is now regarded as realistic. 相似文献

Rhythmic pumping of light hand-held weights while walking or running has become a popular approach to total body aerobic exercise. The use of handweights (HW) in conjunction with walking and running significantly increases the energy requirement of a given locomotor speed and adds variety to the choice of modes when prescribing exercise regimens (Auble, Schwartz, & Robertson, 1987; Francis & Hoobler, 1986; Graves, Pollock, Montain, Jackson, & O'Keefe, 1987). Handweighted exercise can also be conveniently and accurately prescribed for use with other exercise modalities such as bench stepping (Goss, et al., 1987). Stepping up and down on a bench at varying frequencies while pumping handweights is a low-impact, space efficient form of total body aerobic exercise. However, little is known about the energy cost of this unique exercise modality. Such information is important if handweighted exercise is to be used in conjunction with bench stepping when prescribing both therapeutic and recreational training regimens. The purpose of this investigation, therefore, was to evaluate the energy cost associated with combined bench stepping and rhythmic pumping of light handheld weights. 相似文献

Starting from the statistically supported trend of post-secondary education in the United States from the academic to the vocational area, this author investigates:
- the causes of this wide swing of the pendulum towards vocational education;
- the resulting assumption that education is merely a preparation for an occupation and has no intrinsic value. Three main reasons are given for this development: First, the effort made by schools and universities to fulfil their certification function has resulted in their giving precedence to selection rather than to the education of pupils and students and to equalization of opportunities. Second, the general tendency of society to exclude youth from responsible participation in the life of adults is leading to a change in the societal work process and to a gradual breakdown in the family structure. The third factor is the increase in juvenile delinquency and criminality.

Laboratory classes are regarded as an important learning activity, but they also have shortcomings: laboratory classes are often an inefficient learning activity for students and often do not sufficiently support students in developing research specific cognitive skills. It is hypothesized that some of such skills can be achieved more effectively with digital assignments than with laboratory classes. Therefore, three digital assignments have been designed, developed and evaluated. The assignments have three goals: (1) providing a situation in which students can practice research specific cognitive skills and (2) offering a research method which students can also use in a real laboratory situation and (3) providing the possibility to come across a number of common pitfalls. The assignments are described in detail. Results of a first evaluation of the use of the assignments indicate that the students consider the assignments challenging and valuable. The examination results demonstrate that students are quite capable of making a research design. Although students indicate to have learned a useful research method, students do not apply the method in the laboratory classes. 相似文献
