In 2010, the Technical Services Department at the University of Nevada, Reno Libraries established its top strategic direction to understand users’ workflows and strive to build seamless information access services around their workflows. To advance this strategic direction, an innovative reorganization was implemented within Technical Services by creating a new Knowledge Access and Discovery (KAD) Librarian position and forming a new Design and Discovery (DD) department from existing staff. In this session, the presenters discussed the shift to user-centered services, the roles of the KAD Librarian and the new DD department, their projects and initiatives, and how they work with the library-wide cross-departmental Virtual User Experience Committee to meet the Internet-fueled do-it-yourself (DIY) mindset of today’s library users.  相似文献

At the Universidad de Caldas, Manizales, Colombia, we used their new computer facilities to introduce chemistry graduate students to biochemical database mining and quantum chemistry calculations using freeware. These hands-on workshops allowed the students a strong introduction to easily accessible software and how to use this software to begin to explore computer modeling. Each workshop was scheduled for 2 h and each included a tutorial exercise to familiarize the students with the main menus and features of the software. In addition, accompanying lectures and practical laboratory sections were provided. Both courses were taught in Spanish although the written instructions were in English. This was not a problem since these students have a comfort level with reading English. Student feedback following these workshops was highly enthusiastic and positive. This international collaborative will impact both the teaching and research goals for this cohort of graduate students.  相似文献

This paper examines the role of teachers’ unions in the education politics in Greece. The Federation of Secondary School Teachers (OLME) is the prominent group in this aspect of research. The professional and educational background of secondary school teachers, the selection and appointment process, their status and the conditions of their work, as well as their political activities in education, is studied. A reference is also made to the Primary Teachers’ Union (DOE), in an attempt to point out its likely influence in education in comparison with OLME. The conclusion is that, despite OLME's educational propositions and inspite of DOE's continuous attempts at the upgrading of their status, teachers still lacking a serious professional status are not able to challenge the centralisation of educational control.  相似文献

During the fall of 2012 and spring of 2013, two librarians from the University of Kansas Libraries conducted a citation analysis of faculty publications in three broad disciplinary areas: humanities, social sciences, and science. The main purpose of research was to find out if the library provides adequate support to faculty researchers. The authors confirmed that KU Libraries provide access to the majority of items used by campus researchers. In addition, the findings will be used in collection management decisions, such as demand driven acquisition. Finally, the authors analyzed additional citation analysis studies in order to establish external benchmarks for their results.  相似文献

In US cities, a domino effect of concentrating poverty and suburbanizing wealth shapes discourses of local higher education access for residents of color. How the racialization of space mirrors colonial binaries of Good/Evil, Black/White and Civilized/Uncivilized is part and parcel to understanding city and county geographies surrounding college campuses. Although the college access and choice literature addresses racial and ethnic issues related to the likelihood of students of color attending college, the literature excludes how external campus racial climates are part of postcolonial geographies that contribute to racial and ethnic diversity on local college campuses. Situated in the City of Rochester, New York, I employ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect and analyze data from the US Census and Integrated Post-Secondary Education Data Systems (IPEDS). This article finds that there are postcolonial relationships in the racial composition of urban and suburban areas, local colleges, urban economic underdevelopment, and transportation.  相似文献

There is a vast body of literature on survivors of political violence that has emerged over the past several decades. Most studies focus on the psychological effects of political violence on survivors, as understood within the Western framework of mental health. Studies that conceptualize and examine models that account for the complexity of the ecology of political violence are scarce. This paper synthesizes current conceptual and empirical findings about survivors of political violence. Interventions stemming from an ecological framework are also reviewed.  相似文献

The paper examines the role of context in reading unpointed Hebrew, demonstrating the changing nature of reliance on context during the course of reading acquisition. We analyze the reading-aloud of sentences with heterographic-homographic ambiguity, aiming to shed light on the development of ambiguity resolution processes in typically developing schoolaged and adult populations. 171 Hebrew-speaking children and adolescents in seven age/schooling groups (beginning and end of second grade, third, fourth, seventh, and eleventh grade), and a group of adults, participated in the study. Using homographic garden-path and non-Garden-path sentences, we demonstrate the cumulative effect of context as well as processes of monitoring cum reanalysis. Two hypotheses are borne out in the present research: First, context effect is inherent to reading; it is present throughout all age/grade groups, becoming more efficient with age/grade level. Second, monitoring and reanalysis lag far behind context effects, appearing only as age and reading experience increase.  相似文献

This study compared the performance of students in large-sized criminal justice preparatory classes of up to 300 students to students in small classes of up to 40 students to assess the efficacy of student learning in large classes. Incorporating a pre-post test design, ANOVA, independent, and paired sample t-tests, student scholar characteristics were assessed to determine which students were more likely to benefit from the large class structure. Results indicated that large classes are as efficacious as small classes and that student performance is quite nuanced. More specifically, students’ gender, age, race, ethnicity, status, and major, significantly relate to success in larger classes.  相似文献

During the spring and summer of 2008 the University of Kansas (KU) Libraries conducted a collection evaluation study on the serial sales publications issued by United Nations (UN) specialized agencies. After a checklist was compiled, KU holdings were compared to the list to develop a record of UN specialized agency serial publication holdings at KU. The goal was to identify both electronic and print holdings within this specific collection. The project also sought publications that were freely available electronically for the purpose of expanding the KU international government information collection while increasing neither the serials budget nor the physical size of the collection.  相似文献
