In two experiments, we investigated emergent conditional relations in pigeons using a symbolic matching-to-sample task with temporal stimuli as the samples and hues as the comparisons. Both experiments comprised three phases. In Phase I, pigeons learned to choose a red keylight (R) but not a green keylight (G) after a 1-s signal. They also learned to choose G but not R after a 4-s signal. In Phase II, correct responding consisted of choosing a blue keylight (B) after a 4-s signal and a yellow keylight (Y) after a 16-s signal. Comparisons G and B were both related to the same 4-s sample, whereas comparisons R and Y had no common sample. In Phase III, R and G were presented as samples, and B and Y were presented as the comparisons. The choice of B was correct following G, and the choice of Y was correct following R. If a relation between comparisons that shared a common sample were to emerge, then responding to B given G would be more likely than responding to Y given R. The results were generally consistent with this prediction, suggesting, for the first time in pigeons, the emergence of novel relations that involve temporal stimuli as nodal samples. 相似文献

Three experiments assessed the conditions that potentiate effects of an electroconvulsive shock (ECS) administered 24 h after avoidance training. Stimuli present immediately prior to the ECS were systematically varied. In Experiment 1, which employed a passive avoidance task, the primary determinant of whether the ECS disrupted retention was whether the situational cues present at the time of ECS delivery were those associated with the initial training experience: ECS disrupted performance only when it was administered in the original training apparatus, regardless of whether or not a footshock was presented immediately prior to ECS. In Experiment 2, which employed an active, shuttlebox avoidance task, both the situational cues from the training apparatus and a footshock were necessary to potentiate the disruptive effects of the ECS. Experiment 3 revealed that ECS effects on performance of the active avoidance task can also be potentiated by a combination of apparatus cues and the warning signal used in initial training. These results are interpreted as indicating that informational functions of stimuli present when an ECS is administered are important determinants of the effects of the ECS. 相似文献

This paper describes the experience of an introductory discipline to the engineering curricula at the Brazilian Federal University of ABC (UFABC). The university offers a common basic curriculum that must be accomplished by every student and can be followed by professionalising courses. The discipline ‘Introduction to Engineering’ presents the basis of the engineering career, methods and thinking together with professional commitments and regulations. The objective is to help students to consciously choose their careers, minimising the precocity problem in deciding a professional future. The discipline methodology includes activities proposed by the TryEngineering website and from Brazilian engineering councils. Lectures with invited professors introduce UFABC engineering specialities: Aerospace, Bioengineering, Energy, Environmental & Urban, Information, Instrumentation & Automation & Robotics, Management, Materials. This paper reports the proposed activities, results obtained by the students, a methodology critical analysis and the impacts on the following steps of students embracing an engineering career. 相似文献

Here we explore relations between auditory perception of amplitude envelope structure, prosodic sensitivity, and phonological
awareness in a sample of 56 typically-developing children and children with developmental dyslexia. We examine whether rise
time sensitivity is linked to prosodic sensitivity, and whether prosodic sensitivity is linked to phonological awareness.
Prosodic sensitivity was measured by two reiterant speech tasks modelled on Kitzen (2001). The children with developmental dyslexia were significantly impaired in the reiterant speech tasks and in the phonological
awareness tasks (onset and rime awareness). There were significant predictive relations between basic auditory processing
of amplitude envelope structure (in particular, rise time), prosodic sensitivity, phonological awareness, reading, and spelling.
The auditory processing difficulties that characterise children with developmental dyslexia appear to impair their sensitivity
to phrase-level prosodic cues such as metrical structure as well as to phonology, but in this study phonological and prosodic
sensitivity made largely independent contributions to reading. 相似文献

Prior research suggests that infants' action production affects their action understanding, but little is known about the aspects of motor experience that render these effects. In Study 1, the relative contributions of self‐produced (n = 30) and observational (n = 30) action experience on 3‐month‐old infants' action understanding was assessed using a visual habituation paradigm. In Study 2, generalization of training to a new context was examined (n = 30). Results revealed a unique effect of active over observational experience. Furthermore, findings suggest that benefits of trained actions do not generalize broadly, at least following brief training. 相似文献
