This paper draws on data from the development of annual national mathematics assessment materials for 7-year-old pupils in
Wales for use during the period 2000–2002. The materials were developed in both English and Welsh and were designed to be
matched. The paper reports on item analyses which sought items that exhibited differential performance in relation to whether
the materials were English medium or Welsh medium. The items that exhibited consistent differential item functioning in relation
to language during pre-testing are reviewed in order to discuss the linguistic factors that could affect such behaviour. 相似文献

The struggle for livelihood has always been of central concern to working class people. In Australia today the concentration of unemployment raises issues which must be seen as part of an historical process, involving the reconstruction of social division and the struggle for the right to subsistence. These issues are examined in this article, with particular attention to the social and economic changes which have produced this threat to livelihood. Our research has shown that the responses of working class young people to this situation bring into sharp relief the complex social processes through which social division is produced. The evidence suggests that the cultural perspectives of working class males and females in Australia still have a force and significance which represent a potential challenge to the present pattern of restructuring of the economy which has resulted in such widespread unemployment. This raises particular questions about the growth in local employment initiatives in Australia (as in Europe) and its implications for curriculum development in schools in working class neighbourhoods. 相似文献

This article reports a study of Australian and Canadian women in management positions in university faculties of education. It provides a perspective on the contradictory and multilayered experiences of the first cohort of academic women to reach management positions in any significant numbers in education. The article explores the way in which women are positioned as different but at the same time negotiate their place by using marginality and difference as strengths. Many of the women continue to hold to feminist agendas that were forged in relation to the university of a quarter of a century ago. They have strong commitments to 'making a difference'. The authors raise the question of how these agendas will operate in the years to come and whether we can anticipate a new feminist politics of leadership. 相似文献

We report an eye-movement study that demonstrates differences in regularity effects between adult developmental dyslexic and
control non-impaired readers, in contrast to findings from a large number of word recognition studies (see G. Brown, 1997). For low frequency words, controls showed an advantage for Regular items, in which grapheme-to-phoneme strategies could
be employed, compared with Irregular Consistent and Inconsistent items, in which rime comparisons or whole word recognition
strategies would be advantageous. We propose that in sentential contexts, dyslexic readers do not generate sufficient phonological
cues in the parafovea in order to demonstrate the regularity effects typical of unimpaired readers (e.g., S. Sereno & K. Rayner,
2000). These findings suggest that phonological strategies are sensitive to task demands, and underline the impact of methodology
on the conclusions that are drawn about dyslexic reading ability.

This article argues that education has a role in promoting young people’s wellbeing. It draws on research on young people’s
lives to highlight the changing world for which educators prepare young people. While older educational agendas such as literacies
and numeracy remain significant, it is argued that education is increasingly important for its role in assisting young people
to develop the capacities and skills that will enable them to live well and that will enhance social cohesion. Although these
more recent social agendas are often acknowledged in significant policy documents, their enactment in schools is compromised
by economistic policy imperatives that see young people primarily in terms of their capacities to attain labour market skills
that will ensure Australia’s international competitiveness. I make a link between the work that young people do to make themselves,
and wellbeing, highlighting the role that education plays in shaping identities — and in enabling them to ‘become somebody
well’. The article concludes that health and wellbeing are marginalised in school curricula not because of a ‘crowded curriculum’
but because not all elements are given equal value within our current policy frameworks. 相似文献

The benefits of grammar instruction in the teaching of writing is contested in most English‐speaking countries (Jones et al., 2012). The majority of Anglophone countries abandoned the teaching of grammar in the 1950s based on the conclusions that it had no positive impact on learners’ development of reading, writing and language (Locke, 2005). Through an action research design, this study aims at gaining a further understanding of how the explicit teaching of grammar in context can benefit learners with persistent literacy difficulties by adapting the Grammar for Writing materials (Myhill, 2013). It intends to improve educational practice (Koshy, 2010) through action, analysis and reflection. 相似文献

Perceptions of support for secondary school learners with dyslexia in France and in Wales: case study analyses 下载免费PDF全文
The lack of consensus over the origins of dyslexia, assessment practices and the impact on learners across languages has led to different approaches to support being adopted across Europe. This study uses a case study design and aims at gaining an understanding of learners with dyslexic tendencies’ experiences and perceptions of Welsh and French support systems.
