The data used in this article is based on the reviewing of relevant literature to provide an overview of the concepts of organizational commitment, job security, and interpersonal relations, as well as on the results of the original online survey, conducted by the article's authors, held in 2012 in Estonian university libraries governed by public law. On the basis of the current study it can be said that Estonian university librarians’ are generally committed and loyal to their library, but significant influencers of that are general job satisfaction, job security feeling, good relationship with the closest colleagues, and support and recognition from direct supervisor. However, the sign of a danger is that 42% of the respondents are ready to change their job, if a more suitable opportunity is available. The results also show that the length of employment in a particular library is positively correlated with job commitment. The biggest challenge for managements of the university libraries in Estonia is to keep young professionals not only committed to their current libraries, but also committed to their chosen occupation. Management should also pay more attention to improve communication between direct managers and employees, and to improve the job security feeling among librarians.  相似文献

In the current socioeconomic climate, efficiency and performance have become very important in libraries. The need for library managers to justify their costs to their parent organizations has become particularly important. Time-driven activity-based costing (TDABC) helps libraries to get a better picture of the cataloging activities that they are actually engaged in, and their costs. This article reviews the relevant literature to provide an overview of different cost accounting methods suitable for the measurement of the cataloging process. Then, through a case study conducted among Estonian university libraries, the TDABC approach was used to analyze the activities of cataloging process in two university libraries.  相似文献

This article examines salary conditions among the staff of Estonian university libraries. Previous research has shown that academic librarians are not always satisfied with their salaries, whether in developing or developed countries. The data used in this paper are based on a review of relevant literature and on the results of the original online survey created by the paper’s authors and administered in 2011/2012 in Estonian university libraries. The results are interpreted in the light of the literature, the legislation of Estonia, and the authors’ opinions, which are based on long-term working experience in Estonian academic libraries. The study concludes that the biggest challenge today for Estonian university libraries is salary: it is critical that these libraries increase their employees’ salary and thereby improve their economic status. We hope that the issues raised by this research will be helpful not only for library managers but also for library employees generally.  相似文献

The widespread use of information and communication technology, the ease and speed of information delivery, and the increasing availability and limitless diffusion of information have given reason to talk about the integration of the library into the information society. The Internet era has created entirely new possibilities for publishing scientific information and creating access to it. Libraries are essential institutions of the public sector in creating online content as well as in offering information services. While the working equipment has changed in the electronic environment, the content of the work—buying and mediating information—remains the same. Universities need libraries that have long-term experience in systematizing and mediating information. Easy, unconstrained, and widespread accessibility are key issues in achieving a knowledge-based society.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The ease and effectiveness of patron-driven (demand-driven) acquisitions has helped to optimize many academic libraries’ acquisitions budgets. Libraries are increasingly turning to e-books as an alternative to purchasing multiple copies. Academic libraries have for years been forced to purchase large packages of e-books that are of questionable financial value because so much of the content is not used. The number of content units downloaded from large e-book packages by university patrons is not growing. At the same time, the number of checkouts of print books is declining. Advantages of e-books over print are discussed. Also mentioned are a few drawbacks, particularly the fact that European Union countries impose a higher level of value-added tax (VAT) on them than on print books. The author presents a case study analyzing the first two years of experience with the Ebook Library (EBL) platform at the Tallinn University of Technology Library, giving an overview of the advantages and successful measures of demand-driven acquisition in the form of short-term loans.  相似文献
