The present study examined characteristics of students who took advantage of the opportunity to learn Algebra II from a highly skilled teacher. In particular, student information was gathered concerning: (a) the amount of mathematics students knew prior to the class, (b) their motivation for learning mathematics, (c) the number and types of interactions they had with the teacher during class, (d) degree of self-regulation, and (e) general aptitude. A model for achievement was used that suggests both opportunity and propensity are important (i.e., students must be willing and able to take advantage of opportunity). Support for the model was found. Propensity to take advantage of a highly favorable opportunity accounted for almost sixty percent of the variance in achievement. In particular, students who were self-regulated, had strong mathematics backgrounds, and had low levels of frustration benefited more from high-quality instruction. 相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine the role of graphing of self-recorded outcomes and self-evaluative standards on the
acquisition of a motoric skill with 70 college students. It was postulated that students who were provided with graduated self-evaluative standards would surpass those who were provided with absolute standards or no standards (control) in both motoric skill and in motivational beliefs (i.e., self-efficacy, attributions,
and self-satisfaction). Regarding graphing of self-recorded outcomes, it was hypothesized that students who graphed their
results visually would show higher dart skill and stronger motivational beliefs than participants who did not graph their
results. Support was found for these hypotheses. The implications of findings of this study were discussed for instructors
in terms of how the effects of self-directed practice can be enhanced. 相似文献

Student outcomes and perceptions of instructors' demands and support in online and traditional classrooms 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In this study, seven graduate students were interviewed and 187 (91 online; 96 traditional) graduate students were surveyed about perceptions of differences in instructors' demands and support and student' motivation, self-regulation, satisfaction, and perceptions of learning in these environments. Results indicated significant differences in students' perceptions on all variables except self-efficacy. Results indicated a strong effect for differences between perceived instructor affective support in online and traditional classrooms. Although students in traditional classrooms ranked instructors' affective support higher, the variable had a stronger relationship with online students' satisfaction. Differences between online and traditional students' reports of instructors' academic support, instructors' demands, and students' satisfaction were significant with medium effect sizes. Results are important because they provide information about students' perceptions of the differences in environments created by instructors that relate to students' affective outcomes. 相似文献

This study investigated introductory computer science (CS1) students’ implicit beliefs of intelligence. Referencing Dweck and Leggett’s (1988) framework for implicit beliefs of intelligence, we examined how (1) students’ implicit beliefs changed over the course of a semester, (2) these changes differed as a function of course enrollment and students’ motivated self-regulated engagement profile, and (3) implicit beliefs predicted student learning based on standardized course grades and performance on a computational thinking knowledge test. For all students, there were significant increases in entity beliefs and significant decreases in incremental beliefs across the semester. However, examination of effect sizes suggests that significant findings for change across time were driven by changes in specific subpopulations of students. Moreover, results showed that students endorsed incremental belief more strongly than entity belief at both the beginning and end of the semester. Furthermore, the magnitude of changes differed based on students’ motivated self-regulated engagement profiles. Additionally, students’ achievement outcomes were weakly predicted by their implicit beliefs of intelligence. Finally, results showed that the relationship between changes in implicit intelligence beliefs and student achievement varied across different CS1 courses. Theoretical implications for implicit intelligence beliefs and recommendations for STEM educators are discussed. 相似文献

We systematically searched five databases to assess the potential of concept mapping-based technologies to promote self-regulated learning in science education. Our search uncovered 17 relevant studies that investigated seven different types of learning technologies. We performed a narrative analysis assessing how each technology affects self-regulated learning through cognitive, metacognitive, and motivation strategies, according to Schraw et al. (2006)'s model. We suggest concept mapping technologies may affect self-regulated learning through enhancing these strategies to varying degrees. Computer software was particularly useful for developing cognitive strategies through ease of use. Teaching agents were particularly useful for developing metacognitive strategies by coupling visualisation of knowledge patterns with performance monitoring, aided by a teaching metaphor. Finally, mobile devices and teaching agents were most effective in enhancing motivation. Effects on knowledge gains remain unclear due to small sample sizes. 相似文献

Metacognition, Self-Regulation, and Self-Regulated Learning: Research Recommendations 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Dale H. Schunk 《Educational Psychology Review》2008,20(4):463-467
Much research has been conducted on metacognition, self-regulation, and self-regulated learning, but the articles in this
special issue make it clear that we still have many unanswered questions. Recommendations for research include providing clear
definitions of processes, identifying relevant theories, ensuring that assessments clearly reflect processes, linking processes
with academic outcomes, conducting more educational developmental research, and tying processes firmly with instructional
methods. Collectively, these recommendations will enhance our understanding of metacognition, self-regulation, and self-regulated
learning and will lead to solid implications for educational policy and practice. 相似文献

Metacognition and Self-Regulation in James,Piaget, and Vygotsky 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
This article investigates the intertwined constructs of metacognition and self-regulation as they emerge in the works and
theories of James, Piaget, and Vygotsky. To coordinate this exploration, we use an interpretive framework based on the relation
of subject and object. In this framework, James’s perspective on metacognition and self-regulation is aligned with the Self,
Piaget’s with the other and object, and Vygotsky’s with the medium or agency of language. We explore how metacognition and
self-regulation function within the realm of human behavior and development as described in the works of each of these theorists.
Key questions or issues that emerge for current research are outlined, and the limitations and benefits of each theorist’s
perspective vis-à-vis metacognition and self-regulation are discussed. 相似文献

Clarifying Metacognition, Self-Regulation, and Self-Regulated Learning: What’s the Purpose? 总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
Avi Kaplan 《Educational Psychology Review》2008,20(4):477-484
In this commentary on the special issue, I join the authors in searching for a conceptual framework that would clarify the
concepts of metacognition, self-regulation, and self-regulated learning. Building on the insights of the different articles,
I suggest that metacognition, self-regulation, and self-regulated learning should be considered as subtypes of the general,
abstract, phenomenon of self-regulated action. I continue by questioning the benefit of seeking boundaries between these three
concepts. Instead, I propose to search for dimensions along which types of self-regulated action vary. I, then, introduce the notion of a “multidimensional conceptual space of
self-regulated action” as a conceptual tool that allows for diversity of conceptions of self-regulated action while maintaining
conceptual clarity. I conclude by highlighting the central role of purpose of engagement in self-regulated action and by noting its potential for guiding the search for meaningful dimensions on which to typify
self-regulation. 相似文献

The effectiveness of the Tools of the Mind (Tools) curriculum in improving the education of 3- and 4-year-old children was evaluated by means of a randomized trial. The Tools curriculum, based on the work of Vygotsky, focuses on the development of self-regulation at the same time as teaching literacy and mathematics skills in a way that is socially mediated by peers and teachers and with a focus on play. The control group experienced an established district-created model described as a “balanced literacy curriculum with themes.” Teachers and students were randomly assigned to either treatment or control classrooms. Children (88 Tools and 122 control) were compared on social behavior, language, and literacy growth. The Tools curriculum was found to improve classroom quality and children's executive function as indicated by lower scores on a problem behavior scale. There were indications that Tools also improved children's language development, but these effects were smaller and did not reach conventional levels of statistical significance in multi-level models or after adjustments for multiple comparisons. Our findings indicate that a developmentally appropriate curriculum with a strong emphasis on play can enhance learning and development so as to improve both the social and academic success of young children. Moreover, it is suggested that to the extent child care commonly increases behavior problems this outcome may be reversed through the use of more appropriate curricula that actually enhance self-regulation. 相似文献

Evaluating fifth- and sixth-grade students’ expository writing: task development, scoring, and psychometric issues 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Drawing from multiple theoretical frameworks representing cognitive and educational psychology, we present a writing task
and scoring system for measurement of students’ informative writing. Participants in this study were 72 fifth- and sixth-grade
students who wrote compositions describing real-world problems and how mathematics, science, and social studies information
could be used to solve those problems. Of the 72 students, 69 were able to craft a cohesive response that not only demonstrated
planning in writing structure but also elaboration of relevant knowledge in one or more domains. Many-facet Rasch Modeling
(MFRM) techniques were used to examine the reliability and validity of scores for the writing rating scale. Additionally,
comparison of fifth- and sixth-grade responses supported the validity of scores, as did the results of a correlational analysis
with scores from an overall interest measure. Recommendations for improving writing scoring systems based on the findings
of this investigation are provided. 相似文献
