The Corley Smith Library is a small, special library located at the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galapagos Islands. Currently, the library is managed by international volunteer librarians in collaboration with Station staff and local volunteers. Recently the library migrated its online public access catalog to Koha. We describe the process of selecting an open-source integrated library system and implementing Koha. Cataloging in this remote location presents challenges related to technology, staff expertise, language, local practices, and obtaining supplies. We define the strategies to address these issues, including long-term goals of copy cataloging with Z39.50 and remote cataloging by volunteer librarians. 相似文献

AbstractWhen Villa Madonna College moved from Covington to Crestview Hills, Kentucky in 1968 to become Thomas More College, the designers of the new campus knew that the library would be a vital component of academic success for future students. As Thomas More transitioned from “College” to “University” in 2018, the library had unfortunately endured a long slow decline. With a recent renaming to the “Benedictine Library” in 2017, administration knew that more substantial changes were needed. In April 2018, the library started a new course with the 16th Library Director in institutional history. Landman Library is two-thirds of the way through a three-stage process of migrating to the Koha open-source integrated library system (http://koha-community.org). We are an academic library with roughly 143,000 volumes, six professional librarians, and three support staff. The migration to open source was driven by the desire to access our own data as well the need for more flexibility in our public search interface. After evaluating two open-source solutions, we selected Koha because it included modules for all major functions of the library. The phased migration process allowed us to spread costs out over multiple fiscal years and to make the most urgent changes sooner than would have otherwise been possible. The two phases that we have completed so far have taught us various lessons about project management, problem solving, and communication between the library and IT. We learned to involve stakeholders very early, provide specific examples when reporting problems, and have a designated liaison between library staff and developers. We successfully migrated to the Koha staff client on June 1, 2009, and are working on changes to our Web site to incorporate the Koha public catalog. 相似文献

通过对图书馆网站目录数据库(lib-web-cat)数据的整理和分析发现,美国图书馆主要使用3种开源自动化系统:Koha系统、Evergreen系统和OPALS系统。这3种系统在基本技术特点、支持的标准协议、功能特点及维护服务等方面各具优势。经对比分析发现,Koha和Evergreen的系统功能相对完善,能够满足各种类型图书馆的需求,也能为我国图书馆自动化系统的设计和开发提供借鉴。 相似文献
