In this article, we report on the challenges entailed in the development of concepts, methods, and strategies for designing and implementing a cross-national research study of the first-years of school-mathematics teaching, including an exploration of how beginning mathematics teachers differ in their preparation, knowledge for teaching, teaching practice, working conditions, and pupil characteristics. The study was designed as a proof-of-concept for a study of teaching and teacher education to be implemented by educationalists, teacher educators, and early career teachers as an ongoing professional endeavor. Recruiting and preparing STEM majors for teaching has become one of the major efforts at improving mathematics and science teacher quality at secondary level. One question is whether STEM majors who have not had the chance to experience active learning in mathematics and science classes as secondary students themselves know what inquiry pedagogy is. Secondly, it is unclear whether those who experienced inquiry in their college introductory discipline courses will be able to utilize the pedagogy in teaching secondary content. We address these questions through studying an undergraduate research methods course designed to improve STEM majors’ capacity for delivering inquiry-based mathematics and science lesson. Analysis of data from pre-and-post course surveys and students’ written research reports including students’ reflection on their inquiry projects suggests that offering future STEM teachers opportunities to conduct inquiry and reflect explicitly on how inquiry can be used to teach secondary content is important and beneficial.  相似文献

The paper explores a collaborative self-study, autoethnography research project, which aided in informing practice for the teaching of reflective practice in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at an Australian university. Self-report methods were used, because it enabled the collection of a variety of self-awareness data generated processes to help produce insights and understandings. This was achieved by undertaking a systematic approach to the exploration of a critical friendship between two academic support staff members alongside reflections from a recorded, focus group interview with nine STEM teachers. Four self-awareness data generated processes were used: (1) self-reflections; (2) collaborative reflections; (3) reflections on pertinent literature findings and (4) reflections from nine STEM teachers. A thematic analysis of the data was undertaken, which resulted in the discovery of three turning points such as moments of understandings that challenge assumptions and/or lead to new insights. The findings indicated that a STEM-centric, scaffolded approach that utilised the scientific method for reflective practice enabled the development of a shared understanding around teaching and assessing reflective practice for STEM teachers. First, because it boosted self-confidence and second, because it reduced scepticism around reflective practice as a non-scientific form of learning.  相似文献

For students to achieve the goals of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) by Grade 12, thinking and acting like scientists and engineers must begin in the elementary grades. However, elementary teachers may find this challenging -because language arts and mathematics still dominate many classrooms—often at the expense of science. This study explored the causes of student disengagement from their doctoral studies in the biological and environmental sciences. The data came from interviews of 40 doctoral students (male?=?15, female?=?25) and underwent qualitative analysis for content. Our results showed that doctoral studies provide multiple contexts for disengagement, such as the scholarly community and supervision, while doctoral students’ sense of distress, cynicism and inefficacy emerged as central components of disengagement. The study identified isolation, indifference, and lack of support and constructive feedback as sources of cynicism, while distress and inefficacy were more often related to failure or lack of progress in research. Our findings indicate that the source of disengagement can vary not only between individuals, but also between the academic activities at hand. Thus, while promoting an engaging doctoral experience, awareness of what typically triggers disengagement in the doctoral journey is vital.  相似文献

Understanding how well teachers integrate digital technology in learning is the subject of considerable debate in education. High Possibility Classrooms (HPC) is a pedagogical framework drawn from research on exemplary teachers’ knowledge of technology integration in Australian school classrooms. The framework is being used to support teachers who teach various stages of schooling to take ‘pedagogical steps’ in their practice with technology. This article focuses on the use of the HPC conceptual framework in a study of seven teachers and their students at two secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia. Analysis confirms the practicality of this conceptual framework for technology integration in secondary school classrooms. This inquiry has implications for addressing the reluctance of teachers to integrate technology in curriculum. The article concludes by suggesting that more schools might consider using conceptual frameworks like HPC to support secondary school teachers to enhance student learning with technology.  相似文献

Although there is a large body of research on the effectiveness of supplemental instruction for college undergraduates, very little of it has focused on transfer students, who often confront additional sources of stress and historically perform more poorly than their native student counterparts. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of a peer-based supplemental instructional program in general and organic chemistry at a large state university over a six-year period, while considering differences across transfer and nontransfer students. The results suggest that the supplemental instruction improved outcomes overall but that nontransfer students benefit to a greater degree than transfer students, in the form of higher grades and pass rates, from attending supplemental instruction. The results suggest that peer-based supplemental instruction is a useful method to improve undergraduate student performance in chemistry, but more research is needed on ways to enhance the effectiveness of interventions in improving the performance of transfer undergraduate students in STEM fields.  相似文献

While the ‘action’ portion of a Participatory Action Research (PAR) project is a crucial component of the process, action tends to be challenging to define, achieve, and measure. The current paper both defines and describes action within the context of a particular PAR collaboration and explores the process and challenges of navigating and implementing action in a PAR project. The specific PAR project detailed in this paper was executed within a higher education setting and involves a group of undergraduate women co-researchers studying their experiences in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.  相似文献

STEM教育注重通过跨学科的协作学习发展学生的知识和技能。近年来,计算机支持的协作学习(CSCL)被广泛应用于STEM教育。然而,其效果如何?其采用的各类技术和教学策略对学习效果有何影响?上述问题的明确有助于完善STEM教育中跨学科的协作学习设计。基于对2009至2019年间发表在国际期刊上的142项相关实验和准实验研究成果的元分析发现:在STEM教育中应用CSCL整体上有助于提升学习效果,且相较于过程类和情感类,其对认知类学习效果的作用最为明显;从学科来看,其对科学、工程学和教育学的影响相对较大;从采用的技术来看,通信技术、动态呈现技术和共享共建技术对学习效果的影响更加显著;从教学策略来看,案例式、游戏化、知识建构和探究式等教学策略更能提升学习效果。因此,在将CSCL应用于STEM教育时,应当加强针对情感类目标的设计以激发高水平的认知活动和认知成果,注重发挥共享共建类技术在知识可视化表征、知识追踪等方面的作用,通过整合多种教学策略推进协作探究学习。  相似文献

专业素养是专业能力所蕴含的专业知识、思维方式和价值观。教师核心专业能力是一种被称为基于设计的行动力的综合能力,并非PACK的运用能力,因为PACK不是知识论意义上的知识。基于设计的行动力所蕴含的教师专业素养可以区分为学科素养和设计素养。学科素养蕴含在课程之中,通过课程分析可以使之清晰化;设计素养蕴含在技术性教学设计理论之中。以STEM课程“抓住风:设计风车”为例,STEM教师的学科素养包括掌握课程包含的S.T.E.M.学科知识、能利用课程提供的材料制定一款特定功能的风车、能独立完成不同材料捕捉风能的单因素实验、身体力行地传递科学精神。以“以学习活动为中心的教学设计理论”为例,STEM教师的设计素养包括能基于教学设计的基本观念思考教学设计;能运用知识建模进行学习内容分析,并用“(知识点,学习水平)”方式陈述学习目标;能结合实情和知识建模图组块确立任务类型,并将它们具体化为师生交互过程;拥有足够的FC知识(Facts and Cases),并能够设计新的FC知识;能结合实情和动力设计模型提升教学方案的质量水平;能结合经验设计探究学习的学习支架。  相似文献
