| Abstract: | Genealogy compilation in the Ming and Qing Dynasties was a kind of practice based on a Confu-cian Idealist of clan concept. It emphasizes the clan＇s appropriate behaviors and etiquettes in compliance with the national culture. Local clans needed a history recognized by orthodox culture, which served as the proof and origi- nal value of social status and social rights. The history of Dai ancestors stated in Wan Tong Xiangshan Dai＇s Ge- nealogy proves that Dai clan has its origin of nationality and had been prestigious in Tong town. What＇s more, ge- nealogy compilation, building ancestral temples and other activities organized by the clan were to emphasize its or-thodoxy and legitimacy as a clan. Genealogy is a kind of selective textual expression of local practices in local clan history. Through constructing its ancestral history, Wan Tong Xiangshan Dai＇s Genealogy intends to convey and pass down Dai social and cultural significance behind that. |
