| 摘 要： | 美国作为一个本土文化和移民文化交错互动的国家,正确定位其文化身份对于美国人来说显得特别重要。亨利.詹姆斯作为精英文学的代表,早在20世纪初就以其敏锐的洞察力意识到文化身份的重要性,其作品《奉使记》中主人公斯特莱塞对自我身份的追求深刻的反映了这一主题。文章基于霍尔的＂文化身份＂理论,通过分析斯特莱塞对身份探寻的过程,得出斯特莱塞对身份的追求不仅代表了19世纪末20世纪初广大美国人民对文化身份感到模糊的现状,同时也传达了詹姆斯对于美国文化该如何发展的的文化主张。

| Abstract: | The United States combines its local culture and the immigration culture togeth- er, thus it is very important to own a proper culture identity for the American people. As a rep- resentative of elite literature, Henry James has realized the importance of culture identity in the early 20th century by his keen insighffulness. In Henry James＇s ＂The Ambassadors＂, Lambert Strether, who pursues his self-identity, reflects it profoundly. This paper, based on Stuart Hall＇s ＂cultural identity＂ theory, aims to demonstrate that Strether＇s self-identity pursuing not only re- presents the ambiguous feeling in many American people＇s minds at the turn of the 19^th and 20^th century, but also expresses James＇s idea about how to develop the American culture by interpre- ting the pursuit of Strether＇s self-identity. |
