Abstract: | This article is a historical survey of broad trends in the evolution of educational oratory, curricular and extra‐curricular training in declamation and original oratory, in American colleges and universities. It attempts to synthesize previous research on this topic in order to present a cohesive and meaningful overview. This survey focuses on a type of training which has formed a fluctuating yet influential current in the stream of American speech education. In addition, such an overview provides a historical perspective from which others may attempt to assess the value of present‐day oratorical education. |
