| Abstract: | July 13, 2013 witnessed the West Lake Butterfly Girls Band performed at the open ing ceremony of 2013 CanadianChinese International Performing Arts Fest at Rich mond Gateway Theater, Vancouver, Canada. More than 200 performers from 16 bands and troupes showed up at the festival that went from July 13 to August 24. The allwomen band is composed of tra ditional instrumentalists from Zhejiang Chi nese Orchestra. They are easily recognized by their youthful beauty, their consummate skills, their quiet temperament, and their el egant costumes. They are specialized in the stringed and woodwind music in Jiangnan or the south of the Yangtze River Delta. Though it was their first visit to Canada, their performance grabbed the attention of the audience at the opening ceremony. Thegirls brought the beauty of Jiangnan to the Gateway Theater and gave the local audience an insight into the unique characteristics of Chinese traditional music. Local government officials and Chinese diplomats attended the opening ceremony, They spoke highly of the performance of the musicians from Zhejiang. They expressed the hope of inviting the band back for more performances in future. Fellow musicians and professionals who watched the band＇s performance at the opening ceremony were deeply impressed by the Butterfly Girls＇ professionalism. A professional commented： ＂This was a great Chinese music show. I especially appreciated how these musicians connected the separate musical pieces, how they put their instru ments on the stage and how they withdrewthem, how they answered the curtain calls and how they arranged themselves modestly with guests for a group photo. Everything was well designed and showed professionalism of a professional band.＂ |
