| 摘 要： | 古代的城邑往往首先出现在交通要道上，或港口、河口、山口或军事要冲。镇江是长江的重要港口，属东南锁钥之地，且城中有山，山中有城，本身就具有得天独厚的地理优势。京杭大运河的开凿贯通更为它提供了一个发展的契机。交通的便捷使处于运河和长江交汇处的镇江迅速发展成为一座著名的历史文化古城。可以说，古运河承载了镇江从古到今的财富与文明，记载了镇江的历史变迁，孕育了镇江的城市文化。

| Abstract: | Ancient cities were usually built near traffic arteries, such as ports, estuaries and fortresses. Zhenjiang is an import port built within the valley of mountains along the Yangtze River, and is also a fortress to the southeast areas in China. The excavation and completion of the Grand Canal provided an excellent opportunity for the development of Zhenjiang, and promoted Zhenjiang to be a famous city of ancient culture. It is obvious that the Grand Canal carries the fortune and civilization of Zhen- jiang, records the historical transformation of Zhenjiang and fosters the urban civilization of Zhenjiang. |
