| 摘 要： | 在第四部“性格与环境小说”《卡斯特桥市长》中,哈代塑造了亨察德这一悲剧人物,由于自身性格弱点导致了其命运悲剧,而当时社会正处于变革时期,先进的生产方式势必会代替落后的生产方式.哈代在小说中充分意识到这一点,虽然对主人公亨察德充满了同情,却安排了其悲剧命运,也体现了哈代对社会进步的认可和支持.

| Abstract: | The mayor of Casterbridge is the forth of Hardy＇s ＂Novels of Character and Environment＂. Hardy has shaped Henchard, this tragic figure, as the tragic destiny due to his weakness. When society is in times of change, advanced mode of production is bound to replace the backward mode of production. In this novel, Thomas Hardy has been fully aware of this and arranged Henchard as the tragic figure although full of compassion for the hero. And this also reflects Hardy＇s recognition and support for the progress of society. |
