Abstract:Through a physical, historical and epistemological analysis it is shown how much is wrong with the idea that relates impetus theory to a ldquonon-grown-uprdquo physical and epistemological conception. Indeed, it yields that impetus theory of Buridan and Oresme can be formalised and can furnish us a ldquonaturalrdquo, ldquonon-violentrdquo interpretation of (classical) mechanics as well as a more general, physical hermeneutics of the world. Then, the possible relevance of impetus theory for science education is strongly pointed out.
