| 摘 要： | In Martin Eden,the development of the relationship between Martin and Ruth falls into three stages.During the first stage of their acquaintance,Ruth’s ego and super-ego vanquish her id transitorily.In the second stage of intimacy,Ruth is strongly manipulated by her super-ego that mainly originates from her Electra complex.Consequently,she attempts to re-mould Martin in the shape of her father,but in vain.When it comes to the third stage of relationship break-down,obliged to moralities and norms,Ruth chooses to end their relationships.
