| Abstract: | Interchangeable characters are used not only in ancient Chinese but also in modern folk custom, especially on the occasions of celebrating the Spring Festival, wedding, new birth, promotion, making a fortune, oftering birthday congratulation, and praying for happiness. Interchangeable characters are created at random and accepted through common practice. So different dialects have different interchangeable characters and one character may have several substitutions or be used to substitute for several characters. |
