Abstract:Computer integrated manufacturing system ( CIMS ) has received much attention in many industrialized countries. Shanghai Delphi Automobile Air Condition System Co., Ltd. (SDAAC), which is one of the large-scale key joint-venture enterprises engaged in developing, designing and manufacturing automobile air condition system in China, was selected for implementing 863/CIMS in 1998. The experience and lessons of the developing and implementing CIMS in the last 10 years have told us that SDAAC-CIMS is not meraly a technology exercise but an “organization revolution”. There are often much difficulties in implementing SDAAC-CIMS simply on the traditional business system. So the contents of the SDAAC-CIMS implementation is not only technical integration but also integration of people/organization, business processes and technologies. Therefore, several critical issues that must be carefully considered to ensure successful implementation of SDAAC-CIMS include commitment of the top management, reengineering of the existing processes in order to construct dynamic stable structures for aligning the SDAAC to the chaotic environment, and integration platform of information for coping with continuously changing circumstance.
