Abstract:The signif icance of “revolution”is quite self-evident in Liang Qichao’s literary and political careers. The Future of New China, which was unifnished, reveals in a sci-if manner the dialectical relationship between literature and revolution, and the book is a modern fable and future imagination of Liang’s revolutionary ideas. In the framework conceived by Liang, novels and revolution are equal in importance. The paper reviews Liang Qichao’s approach to waging revolutionary discourse, and the reasons why Liang considered novels as the most effective method to disseminate revolutionary ideas. The paper also pays attention to Liang’s means to arouse various revolutionary notions by“the future perfect tense”in novels, and the ways to make different narrative strategies become the subject matter of his revolutionary schedule. The paper discusses the“future”as referred to in The Future of New China, and takes into consideration the novel’s enlightenment for contemporary readers in the context of today’s China.
