| Abstract: | Previous studies on negation center on the scope and focus of negation, and thus pay little attention to the semantic nature of negation. This paper aims at a semantic account of negation from a predicate logic perspective, and argues that negation as a means of cognition is directed semantically not to the clause elements, but to the predication of a property possessed by an argument or a relation holding between arguments. |
