The context of university departments: Differences between fields of higher and lower levels of paradigm development

Abstract:This study demonstrates that the concept of paradigm development can explain differences in organizational contexts of university departments. Departments from high-paradigm fields are embedded in a context with clearly identifiable and distinguishable dimensions. In contrast, departments representing lower levels of paradigm development have unclear contexts where major dimensions like size and technology cannot be distinguished from one another. The implications of these results are discussed and elaborated.
