| 摘 要： | According to the theory of Systemic-Functional Linguistics （SFL）, language cannot be disassociated from meaning. Function and semantics, as SFL suggests, are considered as the basis of human language and communicative activity. In order to reveal the inseparability of language and semantic, this paper aims to analyze and appreciate Hardy＇s poem ＂Neutral Tones＂ as a piece of literary work based on the theory of functional analysis specifically on field, tenor and mode.
