| 摘 要： | 美国英语(AmE)与英国英语(BrE)孰优孰劣之争曾经一度达到相互攻击的地步。在英国绅士眼中,AmE纯属下里巴人的土语,而唯有伦敦语才是标准英语(StandardEnglish)。可是,早在1924年,伦敦大学语音教授 Daniel Jones在其《英语发音词典》(AnEnglish Pronouncing Dictionarg)中就从语音的角度反对过“标准英语”的说法。他说:“我从来就不相信能够在英语世界里确认一个标准语音。”(I am not one of those who believe in the desirability,or the Feasibility of setting up any one form of pronounciation as a stan-dard for the English Speaking world)。哈佛大学已故诺曼语教授E·S·Sheldon在他的《方言录》(Dialect Notes)中把“标准”问题说得更清楚。他说:“所谓标准语,并没有一成不变或绝对化者,它随时间的推移而不断变化,不同的地方有自己的标准。”(The so-calledstandard language is not a fixed and infallible standard,but is itself constantly changing with
