| Abstract: | This study aims to explain the formal difference in the answer form to negative yes-no questions in Chinese and English.It is firstly pointed out that these questions differ in speaker presupposition in Chinese,and may lead to answers with formal features different from,or similar to their English counterparts.It is then argued that the yes-no question system in Chinese,which is far more varied than in English both in form and in the implied speaker presupposition,may be hold accountable for the difference in the answer form to negative yes-no questions between the two languages. |
