Abstract: | Abstract Homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping as well as research on either have not taken into account the implications of the pupils’ achievement motives. This theoretical contribution attempts to analyze why some pupils take advantage or disadvantage of being grouped in a homogeneous class — and why others take advantage or disadvantage of being grouped in a heterogeneous class. Suggestions for new grouping procedure in education are offered. The principles guiding the new procedure are that the pupils should be grouped in a way which releases and utilizes the potential positive influence of the motive to approach success — and avoids the possible negative effects of the motive to avoid failure. Is it possible to create such an educational setting? |
