Abstract:Their Eyes Were Watching God is the masterpiece of Hurston, who is respected as the pioneer of Black Feminism, after the founding by Walker. A large number of critical essays on this novel focus on the feminist awareness of the protagonist Janie from different perspectives. However, the black group in the city of Eatonville is paid less attention to. Hurston uses many pages to describe the building process of Eatonville, and the reaction of its citizens. With the similarities to the South Reconstruction, this event helps to expose the double consciousness of black people, and the cultural collective trauma in their memory of history. But Janie realizes the racial trauma and finally is able to overcome it and completes her self-identity.
Keywords:Their Eyes Were Watching God  black group  trauma south reconstruction  double consciousness  racial
