| Abstract: | Extended metaphor is a popular form of English serial similes or metaphors,in which there is usually a basic comparison which is developed in such a way that every new stage of its elaboration throws new light on the subject.As a textual strategy,it is mainly used in above-sentence level structures such as sentence groups,paragraphs,or even the whole text.Based on the examples from Advanced English,this paper clarifies the concept of extended metaphor,and further illustrates that metaphorical extension forms systematic lexical cohesive networks and thus enhances discourse coherence. |
