Abstract:The New York School of poets is one of the most important branches of post modern poetry, and Frank O'Hara is one of the leading figures. His poems change styles all the time and his personal voice is frequently expressed. Why I Am Not a Painter shows the limit of language. The poet is controlled by the language and cannot reach a theme;word has no way to express the thing. He emphasizes the characteristics of city life:feelings, ideas and experiences are transient. What he wrote seems at hand but it is actually a step away from them.
Keywords:New York School of Poets  Frank O'Hara  word and object  distance
