| Abstract: | Leisure is an important component force shaping the livesof Americans, Increases in discretionary time and discretionary income haveprovide d opportunities for indivi duals to seek pertonal fulfitlment throughleisure. This paper presents an historical overuiew of the development ofleisure in western society, as well as proViding information on the status andconception of leisure in the United States now. Following is a discussion ofthe ways in which leisure serv ices are organized .by public, private nonprofit,and comme rcial organizations, Jn ad dition, the paper presents informationconcerning the organization of academic programg for the study of leisure.Last, the paper inclu des information concerning various social, cultural,political, and economic factors that will influence leisure toward the 21stcentury. |
