Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of eccentric exercise on free radical metabolism in skeletal muscle under hypoxic condition. The results showed that after eccentric contraction immediately, the production of MDA increased largely and peaked after one day. As a result, the role of lipid peroxidation damaging the cell membranes and the injuries of skeletal muscles became more serious. With the increase of the length of duration when staying in the hypoxic environment, the SOD activity of the skeletal muscles decreased obviously in the sedentary control groups. On the first two days after exhaustive exercises the range of increase of SOD activity in skeletal muscles of rats under the hypoxic condition was not as much as that under the normoxic groups. It is shown that hypoxia might affect membrane permeability and inhibit the production of the clearance of free radicals in skeletal muscles.
