| 摘 要： | 詹姆斯·乔伊斯常被学界视为善于运用各种意象和象征手法,他的短篇小说《阿拉比》充满了各种富有意义的意象。在小说中,＂blindness＂是一个重复出现的意象,并具有三层含义：社会现实的象征、主人翁盲目追求的爱情和失败的象征、爱尔兰人精神和生活状态的象征。这三个方面的象征暗含着小说主人公恋爱之旅失败的真正原因,揭示了作者想要表达的二十世纪初爱尔兰社会环境封闭压抑、爱尔兰人精神＂瘫痪＂的主旨。

| Abstract: | James Joyce is regarded as an adept in applying various images and symbolism.＂Araby＂,his famous short novel,is full of meaningful images.This paper digs into its repeatedly used image,＂blindness＂,discussing on its symbolic meanings from three aspects： the Ireland social reality,the protagonist＇s unreasonable love,and the Ireland moral situation.These three aspects not only indicate the reason of the protagonist＇s failed love journey,but also uncover the theme Joyce wants to show——the enclosed Ireland society,and the morally ＂paralyzed＂ Ireland people at the beginning of the 20th century. |
