Abstract:After the increase in college enrollment, the challenge facing policy makers and educational researchers in China has now turned from "if admitted to university" into "admitted to which university". Substantial studies have been conducted to explain this phenomenon by focusing on the relationship between family background and academic achievement, while the intermediate function of parental involvement has not been clearly explored, especially on the pathway to college. In order to find out the patterns between rural and urban parents’ involvement in their children’s independent recruitment and the advantages and disadvantages in college access produced by these patterns, a combination of qualitative comparative approach and case study was conducted in Jiangxi province. Based on in-depth, longitudinal interviews and observations with three families over 7 months field work, this study found that there are significant differences in the parental involvement of these three families in the process of the independent recruitment of their children. On the basis of the theory of cultural capital and parental involvement, the data shows that the rural-urban status and social class play an intersectional role in parental involvement from different families. Rural working-class parents who engaged in the practice of natural growth disclosed a separation from family and school and a sense of constraint and distance, especially when interacting with institutions, while urban middle-class parents engaged in the practice of concerted cultivation were more likely to show interconnectedness between family and school, and a sense of accomplishment and confidence.
Keywords:parental involvement  independent recruitment  cultural capital  rural-urban divide
