Abstract:The study was based on data from the Jyväskylä Longitudinal Study of Social Development where about 90% of a sample (173 girls, 196 boys) was followed from the age of eight until the age of 26. The question investigated and reported concerned whether class teachers are able to estimate pupils’ resources for finding their way later on in life, and if so, what are their estimations based on. The estimations predicted the length of male and female educational route and the stability of male career lines. The estimations correlated with teacher assessment of school achievement and peer nominations of socially skilled behaviour. More attention in school could be paid to the development of socially skilled behaviour necessary in life to reduce self‐prophecy in education.
