Abstract:The classical works of Washington Irving, Cooper and Melville belong to the early romantic period of American literature. However, they evaded the romantic love in their works. Mark Twain's and Whitman's works also showed a loveless and sexless world. This phenomenon is related to the social background and the undeveloped natural environment of the North America colony in the early days. When the United States became rich and strong, American literature, particularly with feminism as its background, showed a different picture, "sweetness and savageness" became a dominating theme.
Keywords:"loveless and sexless"  "sweet and savage"  ambivalence
