Abstract:In this paper, the impact of video playback speed on learners’cognitive processing was analyzed with playing subtitled and unsubtitled massive open online course(MOOC)videos at 1.0x,1.25x and 1.5x speeds through experimental research methods. Results showed that the adjustment of MOOC playback speed caused the changes of video information, narration speed and content rhythm, which in turn affected learners’cognitive process.Appropriate improvement of video playback speed was beneficial to learners’cognition, while excessive speed could hinder learners’cognition processing. It was found that the 1.25x speed was the ideal MOOC video playback speed. When the palyback speed was accelerated, subtitles could assist learners in cognitive processing and reduce congnitive load. For subtitled MOOC videos, the range of acceptable speeds for learners was wide, and there was no significant difference in learning effect at 1.0x,1.25x and 1.5x speeds. For unsubtitled MOOC videos, the range of acceptable speeds for learners was small, and the learning effect at 1.5x speed was significantly lower than these at 1.0x and 1.25x speeds. The results of this paper could offer certain reference to the optimization of MOOC videos design.
Keywords:MOOC videos  playback speed  subtitle  cognitive process  learning effects
