Interpreting the Word “Mo Shi”
Abstract:“Mo Shi”(莫食) is a common time word written on the Qin and Han dynasty bamboo slips;there is a further term pronounced “Mu Shi”(暮食) interpreted to mean “afternoon.” According to the au-thor’s research, “Mo Shi” should be identified as a time word referring to the morning and meaning “do not eat.” The meaning and time range are equivalent to the terms “Ting Shi”(“court dining”) and “Shi Zuo”(“dining seat”) found among excavated historical documents. Unearthed documents of the Qin and Han dy-nasty indicate that, at least in the middle of the Western Han dynasty, people still had two meals a daywhile there is no clear evidence to support that people had begun to have three meals a day.
Keywords:time word  “Mo Shi  ”“Mu Shi  ” three meals a day
