| Abstract: | The article aims to look into the three paradigms that have dominated and still are affecting American communication research. The three paradigms are structural functionalism, political economics and cultural studies. The article explores the relationship between the paradigms and American social background, historical situation and the mainstream social thoughts. In addition, the article reviews the representative persons in each paradigm and presents their strength and weakness to search the opportunity of dialogue and communication among paradigms. |
