| 摘 要： | 麦维尔.杜威是19世纪末20世纪初美国公共图书馆运动积极推动者与杰出领袖。他以改革者的姿态,发起一场又一场图书馆革新运动,成为提高美国公众图书馆利益的运动和组织的先驱:创办图书馆学专业杂志,成立图书馆行业协会,促进图书馆职业的专业化;创建图书馆经营学院,提高女性的从业地位,为美国图书馆事业培养了大批人才;发明实用的图书馆分类法,提高图书馆的工作效率,促进国际编目合作和资源共享;为偏远社区设立巡回图书馆,延伸公共图书馆服务,使公共图书馆成为名副其实的"人民的大学"。
