Abstract: | SUMMARY This article presents a progress report on grassroots efforts to document the Eastern European Jewish genealogical heritage. Most of the resources that are described here were developed by and for genealogists of Jewish ancestry. Until the end of the Cold War, access to Eastern European vital records was often difficult and at times not possible. Because of that, Jewish genealogists focused on ancillary sources such as immigration records and community memorial books. Since then, these have been augmented by an impressive array of guidebooks, serials, and electronic resources (websites, databases). |
