From Cooperative to Court Case: Struggles for Alternative Radio at KOOP-FM in Austin,Texas |
| |
Abstract: | The struggle for community radio in Austin, Texas, shares much with those of other alternative media, while providing almost a limiting case among participatory community radio in the United States. Commonalities and limiting case properties emerge in the context of a comparison to a recent JRS case study. External and internal power relationships, personal engagements, and the importance of praxis versus theory are commented on in the context of struggles with dominant local institutions, and among underserved populations internal to the station. What is arguably one of the most cooperative, democratic models for alternative media devolved into civil suits brought between factions. |
