| Abstract: | The author creates a fictional scenario of library reference service at an unspecified date in the first part of the twenty-first century. Ten major social trends for the 1990s as identified by Faith Popcorn are examined. The reference service practices in the fictional scenario and present-day reference service practice are critiqued in terms of how they fit or diverge from each of the ten trends. The fictional scenario is found to embody more of the significant trends than does present day reference practice. The need to tie into these trends is noted. |
