Medical personnel and medical librarians may tend to think of nutrition in medical terms and to forget its interdisciplinary aspects. For this reason, it is desirable for medical librarians to become familiar with a variety of sources of information on the composition of foods, nutrient values, food additives, and food protection. Many of these are government publications from such agencies as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the National Research Council, and the Food and Agriculture Organization. Less familiar sources include nutrition materials from state agricultural experiment stations and extension services and important data published in a wide range of scientific or agricultural journals, which may be located through Nutrition Abstracts and Reviews, Food Science and Technology Abstracts, and the Bibliography of Agriculture. Sources of current information on nutrition research in progress include the Department of Agriculture's Current Research Information System (CRIS) and selective listings from the Smith-sonian Information Exchange. 相似文献

This essay considers Food Will Win the War, an animated short made early in World War II by Disney Studios for the United States Department of Agriculture. Through a fantastical catalogue of hyperbolic images, the film shows how the mass production of American agriculture becomes the first wave of a new American-style consumerism of plenty that will transform the social order. The analysis blends contemporary theories of affective politics to show Food Will Win the War as a threshold text, revealing the post-war economy at its formation. Using food as a symbolic field, this film ultimately links the endless expansion of consumer desire to national identity and global colonization. 相似文献

When a government operation is given all the money it asks for without question from the Congress, it means either that (a) it would be political suicide to turn them down, (b) that the national security is at stake, (c) that somebody goofed or that the Congress is past its normal adjournment date, or (d) that the operation is doing an outstanding job. When this situation arises several years in a row, and everyone insists that the fourth reason is the correct one, then it must be a very unusual operation. During the 20 years of its existence, RIAS (Radio in the American Sector of Berlin) often smoothly sailed through budget hearings at the same time that its parent State Department was receiving the roughest sort of Congressional treatment. The story of RIAS is a fascinating one, following as it does every twist and turn in the relationships between the USA and the USSR over the problem of Berlin. The techniques employed by this station, and its relationships with its nominal superiors, offer food for thought not only to those interested in psychological warfare and propaganda, but to all those who are looking for ways to reach a target audience with a broadcast facility. 相似文献

Despite their low pay and clerical status, the women who staffed the National Broadcasting Company’s (NBC) Information Department played an integral role in shaping the national network’s program and public relations policies. As the network’s first line of contact with its audience, Information Department workers influenced public opinion by shaping the networks’ responses to individual audience members’ written complaints. They also processed and molded the information NBC executives used to sell programming to advertisers. Still, as women, they were routinely devalued and their labor dismissed as simultaneously rote, irrelevant, and hyperemotional. This paper brings together internal documents from across NBC’s corporate structure to recover the careers of Anita Barnard and Kathryn Cole, two women who managed the Information Department through the 1940s and 1950s. During this period, the network underwent enormous transitions, including the shift from radio to television and renewed threats of federal regulation. The Information Department’s status waxed and waned along with NBC’s need to appease its audience and recruit and retain sponsors. Barnard and Cole’s status rose when audience information was at a premium, but it fell as soon as network dominance over television was established and financial returns assured. 相似文献

The paper discusses the state of access to government periodical information in health sciences libraries. A scan of titles listed in major medical periodical indexes indicates that few government titles are regularly covered. Analysis of 1974 and 1984 Monthly Catalog listings for periodicals produced by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and its successor, the Health and Human Services Department, indicates a shift in the subjcct orientation and overall format of periodicals issued. Some special characteristics of medical libraries which exacerbate the problem of limited access are also briefly considered. 相似文献

A seed institution is an organization that plays a dominant role in a new scholarly field by shaping intellectual directions for theory and research. The Department of Communication at Michigan State University was a seed institution in defining the new field of communication study in the 1960s because (1) of its focus on an integrated perspective of communication, emphasizing commonalities across mass and interpersonal communication, (2) of its quantitative focus, (3) of its internationalization and intercultur‐alism, and (4) of its considerable resources devoted to research and doctoral training.
