In this paper, we describe concept parsing algorithms, a novel semantic analysis methodology at the core of a new pedagogy that focuses learners’ attention on deep comprehension of the conceptual content of learned material. Two new e‐learning tools are described in some detail: interactive concept discovery learning and meaning equivalence reusable learning objects. These semantic technologies were developed at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education and Adaptive Technology Resource Centre of Faculty of Information Studies (ATRC/FIS) at the University of Toronto; they were tested since 2001 in several academic institutions in Canada and at the Russian Academy of Sciences (patents pending: US patent 6,953,344 B2, USPO ?20050149510; Copyright 2005, PARCEP Inc.). We describe the rationale for developing these instructional tools, their main characteristics and results of several evaluative implementations that show their potential to enhance learning outcomes and to provide authentic, credible, evidence‐based formative assessments of learning processes.  相似文献

Behind the characteristics that make use of the WWW easy and attractive lie the hypertext and standard markup languages (HTML--SGML), metalanguages for defining the syntax of markup languages. The fundamental principle that makes it possible to share information through the WWW with independence of environment, is based on the standard encoding of documents. Most current educational applications do not fully exploit the flexibility offered by what lies at the core of the WWW, the language HTML. A discussion of different taxonomies of educational uses of the WWW is followed by the presentation of an alternative taxonomy that aims to reflect the contribution of HTML. This is a double classification that distinguishes between the educational context, where the innovation brought by the WWW is mainly technological, and new contexts promoted by the WWW that could not exist without it. From this it is possible to envisage two lines of future work. First to analyse the educational possibilities offered by the current definition of HTML and to propose ways to use them in particular applications. Second, to provide the specifications and requirements to develop instructional tools to make use of the educational possibilities of the language. An example of the latter is provided by the developmental work being undertaken to provide language support as part of a Socrates--Lingua project. This has led to the conclusion that the present definition of HTML is insufficient for the organization of all the data required in educational applications. Web-Based Learning—usage of the web as an arena for learning—has captured the imagination and interest of science educators worldwide. The accessibility to a huge, interlinked, and complex network of information as well as the availability of novel communication means offer new ways to use scientific information, to communicate, and to learn. The web's advanced graphical tools and computational power allow scientists, educators, and students to visualize scientific data and processes in ways that were previously impossible, allowing a deeper understanding of natural phenomena. However, it is unclear to what extent these powerful tools are practically implemented in science education. Our study, aimed at answering this question, focused on the pedagogical and technological characteristics of web sites attempting to teach the subject of atomic structure. A classification scheme was developed and implemented on 95 educational web sites, of various levels and disciplines, focusing on atomic structure. The results show that advanced communication means and graphical tools are rarely used. While the content of the majority of web sites can be considered reliable, in their structure, level of graphics, and content they resemble an online version of a textbook rather than a new, interactive, learning environment. The tools used in learning processes are in a continuous state of flux. One of the most significant changes is the application of Information and Communications technologies (ICTs) to educational contexts. This provides new possible ways to carry out learning activities, new learning services, the possibility to use new kinds of contents and activities, etc. However, ICTs have not provided as many advantages as they were supposed to, so changes are necessary. In this context, a new set of tools, Web 2.0, offers a new way to understand the Web, in which the user is the centre. Further, users can cooperate in order to define contents. This concept is also applied in technology-mediated learning but there are important problems when one tries to integrate such tools and concepts with existing systems. This paper explores the integration of these tools in traditional learning environments, the various possibilities and their advantages and drawbacks. After that, an interoperability scenario is described and two experiences are presented to show how 2.0 tools can be integrated in learning activities, and its effect in educational process.  相似文献

Distance education requires an instructional design approach that can lead to educational transformation. This is characterised by advanced flexibility, learner autonomy and extensive use of digital technologies to enhance learning outcomes. The main feature of such methodology is the physical distance between teaching staff, peers and educational institutions. Various technological tools are used to bridge this distance and improve communication and interaction. This article attempts to review the literature in the field, with the aim of highlighting strategies for enhancing communication and interaction in online learning environments. After discussing the theoretical framework for online communication and interaction, the authors outline the factors involved in creating well-structured, interactive and dynamic online courses and programmes for higher education students. The article explores the multi-dimensional aspects of communication in online learning environments and the differing forms of interaction involved. Using qualitative methods, the authors’ aim is to produce a framework to help tutors and instructional designers develop more effective online courses in higher education. In addition, this article may be of value to researchers and scholar-practitioners interested in communication issues, to online learning designers, and to institutional managers recruiting teaching staff for online educational courses.

In this work we present a probabilistic learning approach to model video news story for retrospective event detection (RED). In this approach, both content and time information on a news video is utilized to transcribe the news story into terms, which are divided into classes by their semantics. Then a probabilistic model, composed of sub-models corresponding to the semantic classes respectively, is proposed. The model’s parameters are estimated by EM algorithm. The sciences are often perceived by students as irrelevant as they do not see the content of science as related to their daily lives. Web 2.0-mediated activities are characterized by user-driven content production, collaboration, and multi-way communication. It has been proposed that employing Web 2.0 in educational activities will promote richer opportunities for making learning personally meaningful, collaborative, and socially relevant. Since Facebook is already in use among youths, it potentially provides a communicative link between educational content and students’ lives. The present study was conducted as a case study to provide an inductive, explorative investigation of whether and how the integration of Facebook into upper secondary biology can affect interest in biology and participation in learning communication. The results indicate that the coupling of formal and informal communication practices on Facebook serves to maintain interest and open up new learning possibilities while at the same time creating barriers to communication. These barriers are due to distractions, ethical issues, and a certain depreciation of the activities ensuing from the everydayness of Facebook as a communication platform. In conclusion, use of Facebook as an educational platform is not clearly good or bad.  相似文献

To ensure proper competence development and short graduation times for engineering students, it is essential that the study motivation is encouraged by new learning methods. In game-based learning, the learner's engagement is increased and learning is made meaningful by applying game-like features such as competition and rewarding through virtual promotions or achievement badges. In this paper, the state of the art of game-based learning in building services engineering education at university level is reviewed and discussed. A systematic literature review indicates that educational games have been reported in the field of related disciplines, such as mechanical and civil engineering. The development of system-level educational games that realistically simulate work life in building services engineering is still in its infancy. Novel rewarding practices and more comprehensive approaches entailing the state-of-the-art information tools such as building information modelling, geographic information systems, building management systems and augmented reality are needed in the future.  相似文献

This article reports the development and evaluation of a toolkit‐based approach to eliciting children's experiences of educational support, where the children in question experience speech and communication needs. The ‘Your Voice Your Choice’ approach was evaluated using a cross‐case analysis methodology, which represents a novel approach to critical examination of the effectiveness of such resources. We explored seven case studies within a critical realist framework. We found that the toolkit was effective at supporting most (although not all) of the children with speech and communication needs to explore their school learning and support experiences through a scaffolded emotion‐based ‘dialogue’, which was corroborated by observations and other data sources. The toolkit facilitated access to children's voice as they revealed how they felt across a number of relational, learning and support areas, which could be used by services to focus provision and consider how to better support children's social and emotional needs.  相似文献

This design-based research project is concerned with the design, development and deployment of interactive technological learning environments to support contemporary education. The use of technologies in education often replicates instructivist positions and practices. However, the use of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (C), authentic learning (A), and educational technologies as tools (T) to mediate learning provides an integrated CAT framework to design and use learning experiences that transform not only individuals but also their world view. The work reports on the design, redesign, and evaluation of an honors course on the use of information communication technologies in teaching and learning. Analyses identified a number of design principles useful in conceiving learning tasks to support the theoretical framework. The CAT framework fosters the use of learning mediation through the use of educational tools that support collective knowledge construction of individuals and their communities, rather than replicate the use of technology for instruction.  相似文献
