Recent changes have forced Bowling Green State University (BGSU) to reevaluate our documentation, workflows, and communication. There have been staff retirements, changes in staff responsibilities, and a new faculty cataloger. Additionally, BGSU is implementing a discovery layer, purchasing shelf-ready books, and adding more electronic resources. It has become apparent that documentation needs to be updated and, in many cases, created from scratch. Collaboration is critical as catalogers are currently few in number and are seeing the need to work with other departments in ways unheard of previously. The creation of a new cataloging manual is vital to the success of cataloging at BGSU.  相似文献

Over the past 2 years, shelf-ready services, the outsourcing of cataloging and processing services, has become the hot topic in the library world. This article examines the implications of shelf-ready service, both operationally and organizationally, for both library and vendor. Using the format of a dialog between librarian and vendor, the article discusses the following questions: Why are you interested in contracting for (or providing) these services? What do you hope to gain? What are the stumbling blocks to implementing a shelf-ready program? What is the impact on workflow and staffing in your organization? How many and what kinds of jobs are affected? How do library/vendor responsibilities change when shelf-ready procedures are applied to an approval plan … to firm orders … to standing orders? How can quality control be assured? Which errors really matter? Are the same standards applied to vendor staff as to in-house staff? How are standards affected by shelf-ready? How do both library and vendor know when they’re “ready for shelf-ready” in a given situation?  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Adelphi University Libraries contracted to outsource copy cataloging and physical processing with Blackwell's Book Services in 1995. Since May 1996, 17,000 shelf-ready titles and over 16,000 catalog records have been received and loaded to our Innovative Interfaces OPAC. Costs, implementation, workflow, and benefits are discussed in this article. The outsourcing program, although hampered by staff shortages in the Libraries, has been highly successful in achieving enhanced cataloging and improved processing at reasonable costs.  相似文献

In 2005/2006, the authors evaluated cataloging and physical processing supplied through the University of Arkansas Libraries' shelf-ready contract with YBP Library Services and PromptCat. The authors examined 298 titles from three samples, with emphasis placed on series headings. Results showed that while 99.33% of titles received records and 99.66% of records received correctly matched their corresponding books, 27.05% of records exhibited errors affecting catalog access, and records for 38.59% of titles needed modification. Moreover, 32.11% of series headings required further attention to comply with local authority procedures. This study should prove useful to other libraries contemplating a shelf-ready contract and the level of quality control they wish to exercise.  相似文献

Definitions of “quality cataloging” may differ from cataloger to cataloger and from institution to institution. If an objective definition of quality is elusive, how can an institution assess the quality of cataloging work? This article discusses definitions of quality cataloging in the literature and different ways it has been evaluated and measured. Academic library catalogers' perceptions of quality cataloging will also be explored, as well as how these perceptions are formed. The article concludes by suggesting ways cataloging departments can approach the creation and evaluation of quality cataloging in an ethical manner.  相似文献

认为批量编目是促进电子资源获取的有效手段。针对国内电子资源批量编目的实践进行调研,涉及数据质量、相关工具、对书目系统质量的影响、面临的挑战、发现系统对电子资源批量编目的影响等内容。对调研结果进行分析,发现批量编目遇到的最普遍的挑战是数据质量问题,各馆质量评估及数据编辑修改的做法有所差异,整体上国内图书馆对数据质量的重视程度还不够。最后总结国外相关实践对我们的启示。  相似文献

Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) is a proactive assessment tool originally created for quality assurance in manufacturing industries. FMEA involves the assignment of rankings for frequency, severity, and detection of errors within a process. Catalogers at ProQuest undertook an innovative project to use FMEA to evaluate MARC record production. This article provides an overview of FMEA for process evaluation and summarizes an application for cataloging. It considers the tool's value for error-proofing in MARC record creation and how FMEA might be applied more effectively in a variable environment.  相似文献

Abstract

Satellite cataloging operations using public services staff trained specifically to complete non-book cataloging are almost nonexistent or are very rarely written about in traditional library literature. A search of the literature provides little or no evidence of their existence. On the surface, they would appear to take more time, effort, and budget outlay to bring up and maintain. There are real advantages as well as some disadvantages to maintaining these operations. There is a risk as public services staff have a primary responsibility to provide public and reference services and very little time to catalog as well as eep up with the changes in cataloging rules and practice. But it can work with planning, organization, and cooperation between the departments and staff involved.  相似文献

While backlogs have existed in libraries and the literature that describes them, the decline in the acquisition of physical collections relative to digital resources, as well as the availability of cataloging copy has called into question the continued viability and relevance of arrearages. Yet, at a time of economic restraint, a rethinking of library operations is timely, if not urgent. What does nearly sixty years of research tell us about materials that are removed from cataloging workflow pending availability of a bibliographic record? This article analyzes the characteristics of, and reasons for, arrearages, and assesses approaches to reducing or eliminating backlogs.  相似文献

Abstract

Communication of public catalog issues throughout the University of Alabama Libraries has been and still is a major concern of the cataloging department. Many cataloging department heads hold the firm belief that improved user access to the libraries' collections can be provided through an improvement in the communication patterns between several key departments of the libraries and the catalog department. Through the input of a group of public service and collection development librarians, the department should be able to assess the time priorities for materials processing, resulting in a greater degree of probability that useful backlogs would be made accessible with a minimum of delay. As a cataloging department head, it is also my belief that a discussion of the cataloging process and the concerns of the catalogers could lead to more consistent and more efficient processing of materials. In November 1993 the Cataloging Advisory Group was formed as a one-year experiment in communication. Since that time the group has gone through numerous changes in both membership and charge but has continued to be one of the stronger discussion groups in the UA Libraries. The paper explores the group and its successes and failures during its six-year history.  相似文献

Abstract

In response to the impact of emerging technologies, this article examines the relationship between strategic planning and the assessment methodologies of cataloging and metadata services and explores (or “suggests” if appropriate) how to assess cataloging and metadata activities more effectively and relevantly. Besides literature review, the author conducted surveys for more than seventy librarians and follow-up interviews with three library administrators. The results indicate the gap between strategic planning and assessment for cataloging and metadata services, and identify the significance of impact and users’ needs in strategic planning for the assessment of cataloging and metadata services. These elements are critical in transforming the broken links in the current cataloging assessment into a purpose-driven assessment corresponding to users’ needs and evolving technologies.  相似文献
