This article reports the results of a survey of the reading habits and interests of immigrants in Toronto who speak Russian as their first language, including their use of Canadian public libraries, ethnic and English-language bookstores, and their attitudes toward collecting books at home. The survey results show that Russian Canadians use the public library system extensively and for diverse purposes. They also make use of ethnic and English-language bookstores, purchasing materials in both Russian and English for leisure reading, educational and professional development, and expansion of their highly valued home collections. The peculiarities of the demands and behavior of first generation Russian-speaking immigrants are also discussed, especially with regard to changes in reading interests and attitudes associated with immigration, as well as the problems experienced by public libraries in meeting the needs of this clientele. Finally, recommendations for the improvement of public library services and collections for this linguistic group are provided. 相似文献

In the vastly diverse academic literature on reading, ethnic readerships and immigrant reader stories are notably under-researched. To fill this gap, empirical data from a sample of Russian-speaking immigrant readers residing in the Greater Toronto Area, Ontario, Canada, were collected and analyzed using an innovative combination of two previously disparate scholarships—immigration research and reading research. Reading is a contextually dependent experience, and these findings are situated in the context of acculturation attitudes of the ethnic readership in question. Immigration causes acculturation stress in the sphere of leisure reading and affects immigrant reading practices in numerous ways, including the types of chosen books, book selection criteria, and the methods of finding out about new titles and accessing items of interest. An in-depth and thorough understanding of leisure reading practices can improve insight into immigrant acculturation. Therefore, these findings and discussion will be valuable for librarians, LIS scholars, and reading researchers who interact with immigrant readers. 相似文献

“Lots of Questions about ‘Fake News’”: How Public Libraries Have Addressed Media Literacy, 2016–2018

ABSTRACTThis exploratory research investigates how American public libraries have addressed the issue of media literacy in their communities from 2016 to 2018, including programs, partnerships, and other initiatives. The authors selected this period because events, such as the 2016 U.S. presidential election, contributed to an increased national concern about media literacy. This study fills a research gap by providing a broader assessment of public library responses to this issue, as most of the published literature thus far stems from academic libraries. An electronic survey solicited data from both a stratified purposive sample and a self-selecting sample of public libraries throughout the United States (U.S.). Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data from sixty-five public libraries revealed several key themes related to media literacy initiatives, including types of initiatives developed, initiatives deemed most successful by staff, community response to initiatives, and reasons for not pursuing initiatives. Findings denote the current state of how public libraries address media literacy and offer practical guidance for those developing media literacy initiatives. Key findings are as follows: lack of staff time is the reason most often cited for not engaging in media literacy initiatives; more effective measurements are needed to assess both community needs and outcomes of library initiatives; “fake news” is a topic of interest in the community and among library staff; and there appears to be a relationship between staff interest in the topic and perceived interest on the part of the public, which may impact efforts to address the issue. Implications for practice resulting from those findings include engaging in initiatives that maximize service while minimizing staff time involvement; measuring and assessing community interests as well as outcomes of initiatives; using trending topics such as “fake news” to increase interest in library services; and continuing to increase staff awareness of and training in issues deemed important by the library community. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this paper is to quantify, review, and analyze published research output of academic librarians from 21 higher education Institutions in Ireland. A mixed approach using an online survey questionnaire, supplemented by content analysis and extensive literature scoping were used for data collection. Factors inhibiting and predicting the likelihood of research publication are identified. Motivations, barriers, and collaboration are examined. Qualitative perspectives from survey respondents are offered. The survey response was 30%. The main findings are presented and contextualized. There is evidence of moderate research growth and publication rates among the Irish LIS community; Open Access pathways are increasingly accepted. The paper has original value with both exploratory and analytical perspectives. This is the first comprehensive national study of this cohort; it adds value and a new perspective to the existing literature on academic librarians' participation in scholarly endeavours and communication. 相似文献

This study, an historical survey of medical journals in Louisiana before the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861, revealed that nine journals made an appearance during the period covered-all of them published in New Orleans. Of these, two were French language journals published by a French medical society. The others were all published by individuals rather than by professional societies. Medical practices, interests, and problems of the times were clearly reflected on the pages of the journals. It is evident that medical journalism reached a high plane in the era before the Civil War. Of the nine periodicals, only one emerged as a permanent publication after the War. 相似文献

SUMMARY This article describes valuable and largely unknown aspects of the library and archival holdings of The Tolstoy Foundation, Inc., located in Valley Cottage, New York, about fifty miles north of Manhattan, across the Hudson River in Rockland County. The core of the library is the Lembich collection, consisting of approximately 10,000 volumes of a Shanghai Russian-language lending library, donated by the widow of its founder, the prominent émigré publisher Mechislav Lembich. The archives contain materials relating both to the Tolstoy family (including Leo Tolstoy, whose daughter, Alexandra, established the foundation), and to the activities of the foundation in assisting Russian émigrés and refugees from the U.S.S.R. during and after the Second World War. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThe library at Aanischaaukamikw Cree Cultural Institute has a collection of more than 4,000 books, periodicals, and audiovisual materials focused on the culture, history, and language of the Cree Nation. Both Dewey Decimal Classification and Library of Congress Classification use non-Indigenous perspectives that result in unwieldy call numbers for our items, while nevertheless losing the specificity of subjects in our collection. We therefore chose to implement the Brian Deer Classification (BDC) scheme. BDC is a nontraditional system developed specifically for Indigenous libraries in which the collections inform the classification plan. Catalogers with specialized knowledge of the community represented in the collection is essential to success. 相似文献

SUMMARY Jewish periodicals have been published in Ukraine, in Russian and Ukrainian, over a 140-year time span. They are systematically described here, starting with the first such journal, Razsviet (Rassvet; Odessa, 1860–61), with accompanying bibliographical analysis. The central part of the article is a table noting all 311 periodicals' characteristics, including titles, cities and dates of publication, main features, and/or subtitles. Their stages of development, regional distribution, and languages of publication are reviewed. It is noteworthy that at the end of 2000, close to 100 Jewish newspapers, magazines, almanacs, and bulletins were active in the republic. The progress of the Jewish press continues in both quantity and quality. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Through a content analysis and survey, this project explores the prevalence and clarity of acronyms in news headlines. Acronyms popular in a local newspaper were largely unknown to a sample of target readers. When asked about their reactions to unfamiliar published acronyms, about half said they would try to figure it out, and about one-third expressed negative emotions (e.g., frustration, annoyance). Additionally, most said unfamiliar acronyms affect their desire to continue reading, at least some of the time. These findings suggest that an increased focus on comprehension over brevity could help journalists better engage their readers. 相似文献
